Spots (trials) video

Hi all, I'm recording some bicycle trials and will be filming content like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_kNvhGKSrk

I'm using a DVX100B and its important that the content is shot in widescreen. The footage will end up on the internet but might also be transfered to DVD at a later stage.

Now I'm wondering whether I should shoot progressive or interlaced? As I understand it interlaced isn't to great in "squeeze" mode (which I pretty much have to use for the 16:9 format). I also understand that progressive (25p) creates a strobed effect whilst capturing fast actions. So I'm left with a little bit of a dilemma?

What's the best way to go folks, any suggestions?

Thanks
Kevin

I had a DVX, and I always shot 24pA (NTSC), and shoot in 24p on my HPX170. It gives you the most "filmic" look. I always used squeeze mode, and almost never interlaced, so I can't be too much help there, but you will get an overall better image in 24pA. If you aren't familiar with the importing procedure, then let me (or another person on this forum) know, because you can't import it like regular interlaced footage.

In the PAL version, I assume there is a 25pA, correct?

As far as the strobing goes, it is pretty minimal. You get the subtle "filmic" motion style that 25p gives you, but I wouldn't classify it as strobing. If you are unsure, try testing out the different scan modes on your camera by shooting some moving test subjects. See what you like.

Hi thanks for the tips guys, unfortunately the pal version doesn't have 30p only 25p. And I don't think it has the "A" version either. Although I forget what the difference is now (something about different pull down is it). And yes I would definitely need assistance with the import procedure. For now I'm running Final Cut Express 4 but should have some version of Final Cut Studio (with Pro) when its complete... I will deffo need help with that so cheers very much!

To import anything that requires pulldown removal, you need Final Cut Pro. Express won't do it. If you get any version of pro, then it is a simple menu change, by going to the capture settings (inside the import window) and changing the capture/input to 2:3:3:2 Pulldown Removal.

Hi all, this UK trials video is finally going to happen and I've got an excellent line up including some of the UK's best trials riders! I found this old thread to refresh my memory on the best settings for this project. So I went out today with a rider and shot squeeze, 25p. We also did some shutter speed tests because the moves I will be recording will be explosive and quick. Now I want the images to be as clear as possible with as little blur as possible. So generally is it best to shoot with the highest shutter speed at all times, trying to keep the f-stop around f5.6? Is this the best way to go? Will higher shutter speeds cause and unforeseeable problems I haven't thought of? There will be a lot of quick camera moves as well. Can anyone recommend a good shutter speed for me? I'm trying to avoid the strobe effect you get with 25p.

Thanks
Kev

Hi, I have no idea, it wasn't my video. I just used it as an example to illustrate the type of content I would be filming. I've been reading up on the shutter speed issue and it turns out (I already new this but forgot) that higher shutter speeds means more strobing. So I'll need to find a happy medium. Any suggestions?

Thanks
