Spot focus (or "lock" focus?)

I'm wondering if the DVX can do this. Basically the idea is, on other cameras I've used, you can "lock on" while using the auto-focus (usually center-weighted) and then move your camera around to frame your image.

For instance, if you want the object in the lower right corner of the frame (something closer to the camera) to be in focus while the background is softer, you could just point the camera at that object and let the auto-focus adjust, then "lock" in that setting and nudge the camera back over for proper framing.

It's quicker than manual focus of course. And sometimes I have trouble getting proper manual focus using the view finder, so I would use this method a lot with other cameras.

Sure, just use the "push auto" button. While you hold that button down, the camera will be in autofocus mode; when you release the button it goes back to manual focus.

Thanks, sounds like it's quick and easy.

I was looking at this online user guide though, and I found the following quote on page 21:

http://209.85.207.104/search?q=cach...de.pdf+dvx+push+auto&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4&gl=us

"AF - When set to the ON position, auto focus operates when the AUTO button is pressed, the FOCUS switch and PUSH AUTO buttons will not function. When AF is set to the OFF position, the auto focus operation will not be performed when the AUTO button is pressed. The FOCUS switch and PUSH AUTO will be functioning. Not in available in progressive mode."

Not available in progressive mode? Is that true? That doesn't make any sense to me. Why would the progressive/interlaced mode change anything having to do with what focusing options are available?

It didn't work on the 100 but the 100a and 100b can do it I believe.

I see two reasons (don't know if they are correct):

1. Info gets to the AF sensor twice as fast in 60i then in 30p or 24p (60% faster) so it is actually useful. (Most likely the case).

2. If you are shooting a movie (24p) then you most likely will not be using AF.

The switch on my DVX is glued to the manual position :)
