Sports Lavalier (a la ESPN Mic'd Up)

What kind of mic's do channels like ESPN use when they "Mic" up a player for a game where they stick a lavalier on them and show clips with them talking to other players and stuff. Anyone have any idea?

It really depends on the company producing the broadcast, but Lectrosonics and Zaxcom (UHF diversity) systems are the industry standards, with some high-end Sennheiser units showing up as well. You're looking at $2k-$5k per system there.

But there is also a line of thought that, when wiring an NFL player, one would use a transmitter that won't cost a fortune to replace if it is destroyed during play, so the Sennheiser G2, or the new G3, or Audio Technica 1800-series would be the ones to consider, since a single-channel system will run $500-$600.

Though, Lectro transmitters are built like tanks.

Im slightly dated with my info, but not too too long ago
the NHL was using exclusively
Q5X transmitters.

Has nothing to do with quality (aka, lectro or senn..etc)
it is the smallest transmitter out there, so less chance of a player getting injured because of it.

Side note: at least with the NHL the ONLY people allowed to mic the players
are the trainers. Once again for safety.
