F3: Sports commercial

Hi all,

We shot this sports commercial for technical shorts that measure the athletes muscle activity. We also did a longer version with a plot that explains how the shorts work but I think this shorter mood clip came out cooler. It was shot in two days and too bad we had quite plain dull weather. Recorded to Hyperdeck shuttle and mainly used red zooms 18-50mm and 50-150mm. There's also one shot from FS700 :)

Check it out on our website http://www.nobrainer.fi It's the first on right after the reel "Mbody".

Gorgeous work! A very cool, moody look for a commercial, I like it. What did you use for the following the runner from behind on the track? A car?

One of the better looking F3 spots ever. it's weird but to me, the F3, when done well, looks better than the F55. maybe the new cams are just too sharp or something.

2nd that. In the right hands the F3 can be made into a baby F35 - good job, badlaa!

Can you talk more about how you handled post? Was this log and did you use a lut and so on..? The skin tone when he is lifting weights comes to mind. Some of that looks better than what I can get out of a red camera.

I agree looks great. Work like this has inspired my recent purchase.

It is entirely logical to me that it look might look better than the F55 for 1080 delivery - the pixels are way larger and can collect more light?

Thanks again! We shot in s-log 10bit 4:2:2 dnxhd, straight from Hyperdeck to Avid. There was no monitoring LUT in the shoot but I've got used to the washed out s-log look and I think you're safe as long as you expose your middle grey right. Of course it's always hard to tell the client the final video will not look washed out and dull but you have to live with what you got at the moment. One time I tried to emulate the more contrasty image with turning the cine gamma on and of course I forgot to turn it back to s-log - will never do that again :D:D

For grading I used Davinci resolve, simply set "data levels" from clip attributes, used Macgregors modified s-log LUT (set to 3d output lut) and then I had a great starting point for my grade. I think it's important to use a good LUT because otherwise middle tones will lack natural contrast and high lights will clip uglier. With LUT you'll get nice highlight roll off even if you want to over expose when doing the grade. My grading has improved great amounts when I started using LUTs. I did not alter the skin tones much because they came out really nice after the LUT was aplied. Also had some hard times trying to mach the one FS700 shot (athlete arrives to stadium/glidecam) but we didn't have the time and money to use real steadicam.

After all I think F3 is a really capable camera which we're going to keep for a long time. It has a unique creamy look and easy post path. Of course it would perfect to get rid of the hyperdeck and battery mounts but other than that it really delivers. Next week we're going to rent the Epic for first time because we need a more contrasty and crispier look for a jewelry ad.

Thanks badlaa, I remember Miguel had created a LUT for the F35, just wasn't aware that it would translate so well to the F3.
Thanks for sharing.

badlaa,

can you explain why you chose to apply the LUT to output instead of input for your grade? thanks.
