Splitting the HDMI out put for the 5D

What do you guys use to split the signal?

I use an onboard monitor to view what I'm shooting with the 5D and I'd like to split that signal so I can give a director, producer etc... a look at what we are shooting.

I have seen several splitters but they require AC power, is there a work around for this ?

Thanks

I use a cheap "block" splitter from ebay. It works fine, BUT I did need a repeater for any length OVER about 2 meters from the splitter (if the splitter is in use)

You can get a cheap repeater that uses power from the HDMI socket so no batteries or external connections.

One thing that tricked me was the repeater goes at the END of the link.. not the camera end.. then into the second monitor.

Ive used it with 15M of cable and yes.. it still works fine. Not able to test longer lengths though.

I found a couple that need power, I'm sure there's someone out there that's found a way around this. I've seen pictures of people shooting and using the set up I described but they don't mention the equipment used.

Hopefully some here can help.

Thanks

You CAN just get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Powered-Splitter-Certified-Outputs/dp/B002673EW6

And one of these: http://www.google.com/products/cata...IlyTcDWA8Tk0gGa9a3FAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CIwBEPMCMAM#

Or, better, one of these that you can then place inside the splitter/amplifier case and install a jack for 12 volts in (make sure you cover the existing 5v jack):

And then power the thing from a 12 volt battery like I do. I have a 12 volt NiMH NP1 onboard to power my monitor, the splitter/amplifier, and the preamp I use.

Either way, you need voltage for that splitter/amp, but I've never shot a job without it and did a run of HDMI once of 75 feet for clients. The image wasn't pretty but it was there. I do 25 or 50 foot runs normally with no issues.

If you are going to Hang a bunch of stuff on the camera you might as well use a brite-view airsynchd which has a splitter and wireless transmission built in.

Goes up to 100'+ wirelessly.

Totally worth it.

Thanks guys, they all look like good options I'll look at them closer and see which works best for me. Dan your option looks like the best at 1st glance but Chris makes a great point.

If it still needs dc power I would need to work around it. I definitely want to explore this option further and the guy in the video mentions using it on a steadicam setup so it must have a battery power option.

If they don't offer a battery powered solution then I'll look at the Jag power supply option that Jambredz mentioned and see if that's enough to power it so that I can go mobile with it.

Jambredz it's funny you should mention that particular model, I was just looking at their website yesterday and about to order when I said to myself, "let me see if by tomorrow anyone has posted on DVX any other options".

I'm glad you guys took the time to post these other options, thank you.

no prob man. works good enough for me...and when the Zacuto EVF (built in splitter) comes out i'm using that with my zfinder jr. and send the other signal to my 7inch Manhattan monitor for the director. Then the Jag will just be a back up unit. So we'll really be Mobile! Gotta try lighten my Rig also, so i cant wait!

How about this solution:

Connect a 1 meter or shorter mini hdmi 1.4 from my 5D to a splitter,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Ports-H...?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item1c1945ae0b

Connect the splitter to a small monitor to attach to the 5D

Monitor:

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lilliput-66...1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356623858&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Then a 10-15 meter 1.4 hdmi cable with a built in repeater to an external distant 2nd monitor

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20m-HDMI-...ion_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2eb741236a

or if no inbuilt repeater then, connect a repeater before it connects to the distant 2nd monitor. (The external 2nd monitor could be a non hdmi monitor in which case i guess I will need a an adapter from hdmi to whatever)

Makes sense?
Thankssss....
