Spinning Glidecam

I just purchased a glidecam and have been trying my best to get it balanced right, but when I try to pan, it starts spinning around. I have no idea what is going on either or what adjustment to make, anybody have any ideas?

Wow, that was fast! As soon as I start to pick up the camera it starts to spin on the x-axis. I haven't heard anybody else with this problem so I;m wondering if I have just made a huge error in assembly.

It pretty much just spins out of control when I try to test the vertical balance. At the risk of sounding completely idiotic, what do you mean by side-side Charles?

If the rig hangs level when you arn't moving, and the weights are centered (side to side) on the base, then you may have an issue with the gimble . or it might be wind resistance on the screen, if the camera pans by itself when you move.

This doesn't have anything to do with Bynamic Balance, unless you mean that the rig is wobbling when you pan yourself.

What is the rig's droptime?

Aah.. sounds like it could in deed be dynamic balance.

So your problem is that you are having trouble gettting a clean flat pan?

Exactly, it is very wobbly as I attempt to pan and the camera starts spinning around. I think I made a big mistake in trying to figure this out late at night. I'm going to give it another try tommorow when I can think again. Thanks for your help guys.

Make sure that you have an euqal number of wights on each side at the bottom - they should also be the same distance out from the centerpost. Also be sure that they are centered side-to side aswell.

Then move your camera on the stage to balance it so that it hangs level.. And try a medium speed pan & let go of the post so that i can spin freely. It should now pan flat.

Ok, I am trying out your suggestions right now, I need to tweek it a bit but I am getting much better results, though still not quite as smooth as i would like, I suppose that will come with more practice.

What exactly makes the camera spin around when I am panning, it doesn't lean to the sides anymore but it is still spinning a bit, I am just not sure what that means.

wait.. "panning" is "spinning" the camera so that it looks from side to side.

or do you mean when you are actually moving the unit from side to side?

hmm, that's probabaly just a little friction in the gimble. Nothing to be too worried about. That's why your control hand is there to take control of the rig for the final finess.
