F55: Spike Lee shoots F55 on next film

Maybe where the director should be held responsible (in the end) is in who they decide to use as a DP. They should know the individual's experience (with different equipment etc.) and body of work before hiring them for the job. (Just a thought).

Of course. That's the second thought of my post that I left out.

Basically Nate that's what I was saying.......It's all down to the director. It isn't as if Spike Lee is an inexperienced "first timer", so you can't put it down to that. He knows the images film can produce and he has to know what kind of an image the various offings of digital cameras can produce too. He picked the DP, he saw the images on set and the dailies, he saw everything through post production, so I assume he got the image he felt he wanted. If he was unhappy he could have replaced the DP, that happens all the time and there's many a DP especially in NYC that would fight to be in line to work with him, he didn't though.......So there you go.
But if we are obsessing about the technical aspects of the film, picture, sound or whatever, then maybe the film didn't work as a dramatic piece anyway, so if that's the case it doesn't matter what it was shot on.

Haven't seen Red Hook Summer so maybe I should have just shut up about all of that.....But the basic point I was trying to make was that it's better to concentrate comment on a film as to whether it works or not as a story first and foremost. What it was shot on, how it was shot, who shot it is a distraction that comes about primarily when the film / story / performance doesn't hold you.
As I said back in my first posting on this, there's a lot of films shot decades ago on a still emerging and often not so good looking 16/S16 format, but despite the "lack of picture quality" they hold up as classic works of cinema because of the story and performances.
I still believe that the director is ultimately responsible for everything in a film with the exception of craft service, that probably wouldn't work out too well.
Ok guys.....I'm going back into my cave again now.

What the strange additude from Spike Lee..yes, he made many films, but he frankly act like a a-holle in that interview...

Once, years ago, I had interviewed two theatre legends..and one had this Spike Lee additude, but the greatest legend was the opposite strory.. friendly as hell.. that's way he was a big leaugue legend and not just legend who have additude problems..

;)
