Spielberg's War Horse

I'm having trouble believing I'll enjoy this movie at all. The fact that it's Spielberg is the only thing that makes me think this could possibly not suck balls as a movie.

That's one brave horse.

SS is undeniably a great filmmaker, but I always feel like he's trying to overtly manipulate me.

So he's remaking Homeward Bound, but Speilberg thinks dogs and cats are lame, so let's make it a horse, and screw just going across country to find your owner, now we're going through a war zone.

If it weren't Spielberg and didn't have a high production value, I would have thought this was a direct to dvd/tv movie...

I'm about as interested in this movie as I am in drinking motor oil.
+1

wow, i thought jack and jill trailer was a joke, but this is on a completely different level. at least happy madison is aware of what it's doing.

Steven Spielberg is actually playing the period peace, war, sadness, pet, and maybe a touch of romance cards in "that story premise". people will love that movie, it's wrong, people will be manipulated into liking this ridonkulous movie.

It's Forest Gump meets black beauty... I'm thinking that was the pitch. But seriously looks like an exploitation drama, not saying I wont enjoy, just... yeah... could be the trailer...

I don't think it's necessarily going to suck as bad as the trailer makes it look, just that it's going to have a hard time overcoming that trailer for me. I'll go see it, pending good review, but it'll be with a wary mind.

I'm curious, Batutta, what are your expectations for the film?

I'll always go see a Spielberg film no matter what. He gets a free pass for life from me. It could be either beautiful, moving and transcendent like his best films, or a pile of treacly goo. I think the trailer lays it on a bit thick, which is why I made my Oscar comment.

Spielberg was more than my idol growing up, he was my god.

Granted though, since Indy 4 I have been more of a cinemagnostic.

This War Horse looks to be a return to form, but we'll see.

Hey, that's actually a pretty good one...cinemagnostic©2011

So, according to Box Office Mojo, this film is coming out on Christmas Sunday? Who opens a movie on a SUNDAY? Seriously, am I missing something or did 'berg just cut his opening weekend in thirds...?

Also, what the hell, just noticed he's got Tintin coming out the Wednesday of the same weekend... Obviously, these probably aren't his decisions -- Tintin is Paramount and War Horse is Disney -- but two family-oriented movies from the same director on the same weekend? Someone please make this make sense.

Well, if we really understood this, we'd be studio executives! But here is my take.... The Wednesday opening has always seem to me to be a way to fudge the opening "Weekend" numbers, so that may be their bet on that. The Christmas day opening seems to be reserved for very prestige flicks. So, by opening "War Horse" on that day they are betting on extra cache to give the film "Legs" and keep it around for a while. A Christmas day opener really should count it's opening "Weekend" from that day to New Years since the kiddies will be out until then.

I am going to go see the movie, for sure. I am a big fan of SS, from way back like everyone else. As a history buff, I am also very interested in the First World War, especially its impact on the 20th century art. I am not expecting a documentary or historically accurate telling of events of the war, but I am definitely interested in how SS shows that great event. I am also a big, big fan of Janusz Kamiński and any chance I have to see his work on the big screen is worth the effort.

Tin-Tin was ok, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the animation approach and the narrative felt too one note, his upcoming Robopocalypse is what I'm looking forward to :)
