Speeding up and down an audio file

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I am wanting to take a heart beat sound and be able to speed it up and slow it down while its playing (in real-time).

Does anyone have any suggestion on doing that? Any program or software to be able to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Bryan

Pitch and time filters in any DAW like ProTools, Soundtrack Pro, or Cubase.

You can also adjust clip speeds within FCP.

Can you give a little more insight into the context here? Are you trying to do this within an NLE? Is it just a sound effect? What software are you working with?

I am actually going to be speaking and within my speech the heart beat will be beating in the background and at certain areas of the speech I want to increase the speed and reduce the speed of the heart beat on the fly. Does that make sense?

The only thing I can think of would be a sampler. Use the pitch change wheel (on 99% of samplers this is just a live speed change). You can probably set the range to a couple of octaves that would give you 4X faster to 1/4X slower. Oh also Soundminner (a sound cataloging app) does live speed change. You could do it with automation on a plugin but though "live" you would be locked in to placement. Of course you could also (depending on the app) assign the parameter to an external controller so... Or play it back from a time line in an app that has a lockable shuttle, you would sort of have to move up and down in steps but...

Ableton Live is designed to be a DAW that's used for live performance... it's made to function as another instrument on stage. With a USB controller (such as the single-channel fader strips from PreSonus and M-Audio), you might be able to do this. I'm not terribly familiar with the extent of Ableton's capabilities, so anyone out there who does know for sure, please chime in.

However, if it's just for this one sound and this one performance, that's a pretty big investment.
