FS7: Speed Booster vs Kipon Baveyes

Ive got the Metabones Speed Booster with a Canon 24-105 and am very happy with the image quality.

I'm after a cheaper focal reducer for my B Cam & Ive searched far and wide on the web and haven't found any IQ comparisons between the Speed Booster and Kipon Baveyes focal reducer.

Wondering if anyone owns the Kipon or has done a comparison between the Speed Booster?

Cheers

I did a test using a 55mm Zeiss Otus wide open at f/1.4 (f/1.0 after focal reduction) using both a Speed Booster ULTRA and a Kipon Baveyes:

Caveat: I designed the Speed Booster, so I do have a stake in this game. However, I did purchase two of the Baveyes adapters, and both were equally bad as seen here.

Thanks Brian,

Since posting i purchased a Baveyes but was not impressed with the IQ so i returned it.

As mentioned i got the latest model Speed Booster for my FS5 and its been truly amazing.

I'm now not looking for a straight EF to E mount adapter and have heard good and bad things about the Metabones T Smart Mark IV adapter i.e ruining 24-105 lenses and extreme slow auto focus. So I'm reluctant to spend the $ just now.

Ive now ordered a Commlite and will try that out when it arrives. I'm also hiring a Metabones today for a shoot to see how it goes and have my eye on the new Sigma adapter which is going to be released this month - it has fantastic reviews.

Brian,

since you are here, may I cheekily ask if there is any chance of an FZ Speedbooster?

I realise that the PL ring sticks out in a way that the E-mount doesn't, but the flange depth is the same and I for one would not be troubled to lack lens data communication (personally I'm a Nikon lens user so don't have the lens data anyway with my current mount). I would gladly accept mechanical compromises if there was some way you could make your lovely optics available to us FZ users ;-)

I'm in the UK and I know a fair few F5 and F55 owners and users in real life who would bite your hand off for an FZ Speedbooster!

I did develop some special Speed Boosters for FZ about 2 years ago, but my customer abandoned ship. I doubt that Metabones would be interested due to the small market size. I'd do it myself, but all my resources are tied up with other projects for at least a year or two.

Wow, thanks for the reply and it is fascinating to know that you have worked this up already.

Such a shame that the market size would not be enough for Metabones. I wonder how many units and at what price would make this economically viable and interesting for Metabones. After all, they have recently gone through the process of developing a very neat EF to FZ mount and I'm sure that an FZ Speedbooster version - particularly alongside a mechanical Nikon F to FZ Speedbooster option - would be of huge interest to F5 and F55 owners and essentially a requirement for rental houses if it were available.

F5 and F55 owners have already invested significantly more in their kit than FS7 owners yet many - like me - work with stills lenses day to day; I would not be surprised if many would be interested in getting both non Speedboosted and Speedboosted versions.

When I bump into F5 and F55 owners and we talk about the gear, the one consistent jealous lament towards FS7 owners (besides how much less they spent on their camera :-) ) is that they have the Speedbooster option. Flipping the other way, on 'should I get an F5 or an FS7' threads (including one on the go here currently) almost certainly someone will mention E-mount Speedbooster as a factor in swinging them towards the FS7.

You and Metabones have made a great many camera people very happy with a brilliant range of adapters; if only these great tools could reach us with the FZ cameras! ;-)

Thanks,

Ben
