FS7: Speed Booster Question

Thanks for the reply. I thought the optics in a speed booster would compensate for flange distance.

We have a set of Rokinons in E Mount that are great but massively cropped. I'm trying to find a way to enlarge the field of view without throwing these out and switching to EF mounts.

Never mind. Just bought a Canon EF version to compare and it looks as though the flange distance goes the wrong way. Guess I'll be buying a new set of lenses.

is there a reason you aren't just buying 1-2 wider e-mount prime vs. a whole new set?

What lenses do you currently have? What camera are you used to shooting with?

I don't see much point in getting E mt Rockinons. Maybe that's what you've realized. If you have an A7 it makes sense to get native lenses for the Auto features but you don't have those anyway on the Rockinons.
With EF you get speed booster and a standard metabones - 2 choices on the field of view, lower DOF and an extra stop of light - no brainer.

Yep, agree with this. Should have done more research.

We have the set from 16mm through 85mm (16, 24, 35, 50, 85). Close as they are, it's hard finding just the right frame. I also feel like I'm missing the characteristics of having the whole field of view. Something's just missing.

My go-to is Epic or Alexa with Ultra Primes (rental). The FS7 is our in-house pickup shot/documentary package.

I think I get what you are onto- a "reverse speedbooster" of sorts. One that instead of narrowing the light path expands the light path. And in that makes APS-C lenses cover Full-frame, albeit with costs to image quality.

I'd like there to be a speedbooster in which it is possible to swing the lens of the speedbooster adapter out of the light path, similar to the "doubler" element on ENG zooms. That way you avoid having to swap from a speedboosted adapter to a standard adapter and any given zoom would have greater focal length range. A Canon 24-70mm would effectively become an 18-70mm. With speedbooster engaged it would be an 18-50, with speedbooster disengaged it would be a 24-70mm. And the beauty of such a thing would be that you'd only gain speed. At worse the lens would be its native speed. In the case of the Canon f/2.8 24-70mm it would either be an f/2.8 or an f/2.0. A f/2.8 24-70 becomes a f/2.0-2.8 18-70mm.

I've already named this the "Speedbooster Hot-Swap" so if you see Metabones come out with such a thing with that name, they've ripped me off. :cheesy:

Ha! You should copyright the name stat!

I was actually thinking that you'd still narrow the beam to fit the sensor (like a standard speed booster) but using elements in the adaptor to compensate for the change in flange focal distance. Basically, something that doesn't exist for the same reason that they don't make an adaptor to use E Mount lenses on EF mounts.

I've also researched changing the mounts to EF but they don't sell those parts.

Soooo it looks like we're buying a whole new EF set that'll fit onto a Speed Booster. The whole investment is only going to be like $2500.
