Special Effects with iMovie

Hello everyone, I just started digging more into adding effects to my videos with iMovie. I already learned how to add a simple muzzle flash and sound for a gun shot. Now I want to learn how to add the blood effects as well.

My problem is that with almost every effect I get (mostly from detonationfilms.com) there is a black background whenever I insert the effect. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this with iMovie?

iMovie is what I have for now as I don't have the money to afford the more expensive software (Final Cut Pro or Adobe After Effects). If anyone has any free simple software recommendations I appreciate it.
 
Yeah, I'd have thought iMovie would have some simple compositing modes to handle alpha channels. If not, you're going to have big problems with any special effect that requires multiple layers of video.
 
Well what I am doing right now is getting the special effects i.e. blood splatter images into GIMP and then change all the things (alpha channels and else).

I wish I could afford Adobe After Effects, but for now iMovie is what I have (and it's probably gonna be a while lol). Besides that, anyone else have any tips?
