Special Effect: Hitting someone with a car

Re: Special Effect: Hitting someone with a car

i did a car hit for a cheezy day project with a friend who wanted to do a quickie B movie.

we filmed it in VERY exaggerated slow motion. he moved at about 1/25 the speed of real life.

get shots of the car coming at that speed towards the point of impact, then from the perspective of inside the car and then behind the car.

then speed it up. it looked much more realistic than i ever would have thought.

one tip, we were going to use fake blood but my wife informed us that there isn't any blood at the instant of impact.

she has seen a lot of people brought in after being hit by all sorts of vehicles and she said your are way more likely to see their brains than any quantity of blood.

i'm not sure but i think it has something to do with their hearts not beating after their dead.

Re: Special Effect: Hitting someone with a car

i don't think brendan lee was hit with a live round, i think a blank shell hit him in the neck, a freak accident. but it just shows how dangerous that stuff can be. anyways, i think a composite chot is the way to go.

0. this shot is static, locked down.

1. shoot your actor doing whatever they do up until (and a little beyond) the point where they get hit by the car.

2. shoot the car flying by the shot.

3. you gotta mask the car layer in post, so it looks like it's in the same shot as your actor.

4. save the frame of your actor at the point right before the car makes contact with him. the next frame, get rid of your actor layer, and adjust your car's mask so it's whole frame is visible.

5. use the frame of your actor and cut it into, head, torso and legs, bend those layers around the car (so it looks like his body is wrapping around the car as it carries him out of the frame) use plenty of motion blur to hide the separate peices of your actor.

Re: Special Effect: Hitting someone with a car

Your link wouldn't work - but to let you know I did a very similar effect in a short I worked on.

Instead of digitally moving the actor over the hood of the car, however, I actually shot him rolling on it - then masked the car moving INTO the shot, and shifted the actor appropriately. It let the actor's reaction be as realistic as possible.

So it was achieved in several takes:

One clean plate,
One with the actor walking up to, and rolling off the hood.
One with the car driving till he'd "hit" the actor, then stopping around the right spot.

With enough play in post, we got a relatively good effect with NO danger to the actor whatsoever.
