Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Good work! I like the concept, and the "action movie" lighting helps make your point. Some of those thugs were pretty convincing. :)

My only comment is that there seem to be a few too many clips of the guy on the couch screaming, "yeah!". It just seems like overkill; I think the audience will get the point when the cheesy romance flick turns into an action movie without hearing/seeing the guy yell so many times. :P

Anyway, that's just the only thing that stuck out to me. Nice job.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

The spot looks beautiful, most certainly. Either you're a great DP, or you hired someone who knew what they were doing. Nice casting and sets too.

The big thing that I'd bring up, before the repeated "yeah"s even, is that you could definitely cut this down into a thirty second spot, instead of sixty. The pacing seems really slow for a relatively easy concept to set up. Even the tag at the end could be trimmed down a spell, so you've got a quick BAM BAM BAM with the animated logo. I think the whole thing would just zing if you shortened it. Remember, with the spec ad, that you're trying to show that you can manage a great storyline, but (usually anymore), keep it to thirty seconds.

Hope that helps at all.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Goota agree with the above takes. Cut this down to 30 and you got a winner. Nicely shot.

The talent was 'so - so' but the footage is great although these days Im a huge fan of saturation and filtered effects.

Good job.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Can you give us a heads up on the lighting for the tv illumination setup, I would love to get that right myself ;) esp the filckers!

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Did you use a Matte box? If so I notice a little vignetting at the top of the spot. I have a Cavision Matte Box and I am dealing with this issue now.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

I thought the shoot was pretty awesome but as already pointed out, it could be a little shorter. I think it would have way more of an impact that way.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

;D ;D ;D
LOL! That was pretty funny. Is the framerate suuposed to be wierd like that or is it just me?

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Thanks for the feedback.

We did 60 as opposed to 30 or 45 because contrary to what was mentioned here, this is not an easy concept to set up. We descovered this in the edit. This concept is tricky because you 1) risk implying the guy is drunk (as opposed to his perception changing, which done unsuccessfully causes the spot to fail) and 2) you risk the audience believing the movie in reality actually changes into an action flick

In short, this spot took longer to "set up" than we originally thought. Believe me, I would get criticisms of "over editing", "too fast" or "didn't make sense" if it was cut as a 30. I'm pretty young (21) and so is the rest of my bunch, and were relatively new at estimating the length of time to successfully execute a concept. Would it be better to do a 30 sec spot as opposed to 60? Probably. But for this concept it just moves way to fast as a 30. Live and learn.

As far as a DP, I went with a friend Michael Lowhorn who knows what he's doing with the camera. Gaffing was done by some film students here in St. Louis, and I thought they did a pretty good job.

The light gag on the fireplace was done with a rented "magic box" that I think is on a computer controlled flickering system. The TV was done guerilla style, but is just as effective. We had two gelled lights that one of the grips slid his hand across while shooting.

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

I thought it was a little long but I can see you cannot obviously trim the time down because there is so much information jammed packed into the 60 seconds you already have. It is great though! The talent really isn't that good so if good talent was part of this I am sure it would look even better...can't wait to see more work!

Re: Spec Commercial on DVX

Yeah, most my other work is shot on the DVX100. I've shot a lot with it myself, although recently I'm inclined to leave it to the pros shoot and gaff my projects.

I've done two other shoots on the SDX900, one of which is on my web site (the Fitzs Root Beer commercial). I think I've done about 8 or 9 commercials and shorts in college, 5 which were shot on the DVX100. So I'm obviously a huge fan.

As for the Matte Box question, we didnt use a Matte Box, and we had the same filter setup for most of the shoot so I'm surprised just 1 or 2 shots are vignetting. Its outside the video safe areas so it looks fine on a TV.

I'm from St. Louis, MO (home of Bud Light and A-B) and Anheuser-Busch just started looking at yesterday. Wish us luck. If for anything, they get to see our stuff and we'll surely get feedback.
