Speakers

I know this is a cinema form, but I don't really know where else to ask this..
But I am looking for new speakers that I can use to hook up to my computer and to set up for "get togethers" for music - electronic - music with big bass.
Not specifically for "cinema" purposes.

I currently have the Logitech THX Z623 speakers.
They are okay, but I need something more powerful. I am constantly pushing the speakers and the sub to near max.
And I well, already blew the sub (HAHA - but got it replaced) and worried that I may blow the speakers as well.
Hence, why I want something more powerful so this doesn't happen.

Want to purchase locally only.
$1000 is my MAX budget. Basically, from what I understand I need 2 bookshelf speakers, 1 subwoofer, and an amplifier.
Was at 2001 A.V. and saw a great pair of Paradigm Atom speakers for $360. Amplifier for $300, and a sub for $400. Which is at my max budget.

But, I have questions about SPECS.
I barely know anything about audio in terms of specs. I just know it needs to be powerful (so I don't have to max it out and blow it), be clear and loud.
What specs should I be looking for?

The bookshelf speakers, what are your thoughts on them?
For the sub. I need something powerful with a low bass. And any recommendations for something under $400?
What Amplifier would I need? (Connection via fiber optic audio cable is perfect)

This is what I was recommended:

Seriously, for that budget, go with PA speakers. I have one ElectroVoice ELX115P on either side of my editing computer and they serve very nicely, 1000 watts each, 15" drivers and you could get a pair for around $1k. They will serve you well for your "get togethers" I'm guessing (under 200 people?)

I have really considered and wanted PA speakers. But, the thing is, Im looking at using them for my computer as well, and there just isn't room for those massive speakers. Don't have the budget or need for two sets.
So, it would be more of a home theater type of setup. Loud but compact. The Paradigm Atom speakers are the size id be interested in. Not too small and not too big.
So, bookshelf speakers seems to be the best option for me at the moment.

Groups anywhere from 20-150 or so?

I could not recommend anything but live performance speakers. 'Studio' monitors would not cut it for that application.. or visa-versa.

5X JBL control 1's and a sub bass should give you a good compromise of a compact system that can give good coverage at a reasonable cost.

While not exactly 'speakers'... what sort of power amplifiers are 'recommended' for the less that $300 budget? Every time I go and look, it seems that I find for that 'low price' a box that not only has an amplifier... but a radio tuner, a few other 'features', and nothing in the way of just 'here are the input jacks, and there are the speaker wires'...

There's also some number of 'class-D' amplifiers, which seem to be 'cheap', but also tending to be noisy, given they use a high frequency carrier that is 'filtered' out to some degree or another.

I love my KRK Rokit 5 pair and K10 subwoofer. It's loud, clean, and works for a variety of purposes. You could afford the Rokit 8s with your budget. That sub is awesome though. The great thing about the KRKs is they are powered and don't require an amp to get loud. I would recommend getting powered speakers over an amp/passive speaker combo.
