SPARROW trailer music

Okay, so I'd love some input here. I'm now moving on to draft #4 of the trailer music to Trailer B for our short film SPARROW. Brian Moody, the composer out of Atlanta, has done a wonderful job with the score for the entire film, as well as Trailer A, but we're having a tough time with Trailer B.

I'll post all three versions here (1 minute each), and I'd love some input of what you feel works & doesn't work. I'm afraid I may be nitpicking too much here, and should perhaps just merge some of these together & call it good. Keep in mind when watching that not all of the SFX are in, and there's a couple small adjustments to be made to the video still (input is welcome, however).

Draft 1 (completed score, but felt it was too tribal & didn't care for the opening - also felt it didnt really add to the dramatic in/out fades near the end)

Draft 2 (This was a rough, which I gave further input on to develop the 3rd musical draft)

Draft 3 (LOVED the opening - same as Draft 2 - but in comparison wonder if I like the 1st draft better now! AUGH!)

I gotta go with #3.

It feels more congealed than #2, and I agree that #1 is just too tribal.

Wow, #3 it is then, thanks! Now is it just that #3 is the best of the group, or do you guys really LIKE it as is? I'm questioning if the transition at 00:39 - 00:40 is too abrupt ... and if those two pieces even flow at all, or if it feels we're trying to cram too much in, music wise.

Visually, is there anything not workig for you? I had one person state that they were confused with "ONCE A HERO", as they were expecting it to finish with "ALWAYS A HERO" ... my thought was that we didn't need to state the rest, as everyone's minds would fill in the blank.

Thanks folks for the feedback so far!

If you wanted to check out TRAILER A, which has been completed for a couple of weeks now, it's at the website at www.sparrow-themovie.com, under THE FILM link.

Stop overthinking it :) Personally, I chose #3 cause I liked it, not just cause it was the best of the three. The transition is abrupt, but I think it should be...it is a change in tone and fits the direction the story is heading in IMHO.

The trailer works for as is, I don't think it is necessary to spell out everything...it is a trailer, after all, and not a film with a complete story.

Actually, TC, Brandon, Larry_R, and myself PM'd each other and decided we'd all say #3 even though we really like #1 better.

Hope that helps,
Jan

Okay, so now try THIS one on for size! :) For some reason #3 just still wasn't sitting that well with me, so I pushed the composer for a complete rewrite, with further direction on what I was hoping to hear.

We now both LOVE this one, and he's glad I pushed him. There's a small refinement that will still occur near the end when she fades in & out walking towards us (I'm looking for an instrument that adds some dramatic power to those images), but this is otherwise the final.

Let me know if you like this one better than the rest ... guess it doesn't really matter, since it's the one I'm going with, but I'd still be curious to know if you like it the best of all.

Perhaps I'm crazy (always a very real possibility :) ) or you are pulling a prank on us. This version is identical to #3 from before (at least the version that it is linked to now). I don't have the original #1-#3 versions, so I just re-downloaded #3 because this version sounded so familiar. I compared various sections of each and they sound identical.

What gives?

Larry, the beginnings are extremely similar, as I liked the opening (reason #2 & #3 were the same). So I sent him back for up to a complete rewrite, but he was able to salvage the things I liked & then brought some new stuff into it. When you'll REALLLY notice a difference is with the added SFX in the second half with the swings, etc. (he added all those on his own accord), when Meltdown powers up, the transition to ONCE A HERO, etc.

In #3, the music was actually fighting the images at the point when Meltdown powers up, because it's a dramatic moment, yet the music transition faded to bring in the next ... things like that, which were driving me crazy.

If you listen to both version entirely, you should notice very distinct differences.

ok, i didn't watch the original 3, but i liked the last one.

one thing, there is like a ton of sound effects in the :36-:40 range, and most of them don't seem to coincide with anything ... the visual effects are much better tho!

Sounds much better. Also, I think hybridtheory has a point. The editing is a little muddy from :36 to :40. I don't think it's the sound.

Besides that, it's lookin' good.

Hmm, I'll have to look more closely at that section tonight. Thanks guys! I noticed the swing SFX, etc. in that section & thought "Cool, now I don't have to do anything", but didn't play close attention to see if it sync'd or not.

Paul, if it's the visuals that are muddy, what do you mean? I want to know what specifically you're talking about for the term muddy, when I go to look at addressing it tonight. :)

For me, the trailer loses momentum around :33 (fade to black). From 35 to 39 I'm not sure what is supposed to be happening. Then, when we see "Once a Hero", things get back on track.

So from 33-40, it doesn't seem like action, but it isn't 'the calm before the storm'.

...and, yes, I want you to be this picky when I post my trailer.:)

I like it -- SFX and all. Does this thread also prove that Larry really is crazy?! Do I have to find a new agent??
