spanned footage?

Okay, I was on a shoot with 1, 16GB p2 card, and I shot quite a few shots that didnt exceed 20 sec, 1 min, so on for b roll, and then I shot the actual interview which I let the camera roll for like 26min and when I go to log the footage everything logs in fine exept the 26min take....It looks like it loads (it takes the required time and gives me status) but right at the end it just gives me a "!" and theres no footage logged?

First off what is spanned footage and is there a way to resolve this, I cant figure it out anywhere online??

Thanks A lot!

Andrew

Spanned footage is normally when you are recording across 2 P2 cards, and the clip begins on 1 P2 card and then ends on the 2nd P2 card. You also see spanned footage when using the Firestore, because the Firestore can't record a clip over a certain size, so it starts recording on a 2nd clip, and they get spanned together on import.

What program are you using to import? Try downloading the demo of P2 Log Pro to see if it works with that program. The demo will only import one clip, but if you copy the P2 to your computer, and remove the other clips, it should open the one you want.

Usually if you have two cards in the camera and a clip fills one card and moves across to the other card is 'spanned'. If you the mount the cards on the Mac via the camera FCP will stitch the clip back together.

I could be wrong but it sounds like your clip wasn't 'closed' during recording and so FCP is having difficulty reading it. I think thee is a facility to 'repair' a clip in the camera.

You might want to try to import it as a single folder volume and not the spanned volumes. Also did you have any error messages when it spanned. I learned the hardway that there's about 10 seconds of a pause mode when a card is doing the spanning that you aren't supposed to pull out the card.. even though it says it's full.. it kind of blinks yellow till it's ready to be pulled out. Did you have the in and out times recorded? If not.. there Might be a way to repair the clip.. but I haven't ever been successful in rewriting the MXF files back to the P2 card.. says they are read only. Anyone successful in writing MXF to the cards? I have done a firewire transfer to the cards but that was different and if he can't get the quicktime then that won't work.

i have a spanned clip too, actually a couple of them... i was only using one card though... all i can figure out is i let it get completely full a couple times (thus causing the spanned issue). so, what is the option here to get these imported into fcp6???

Hi,

I'm using FCP Studio 2 and import using Log and Transfer. I have never had a problem (not yet anyway) and FCP recognises the spanned clips and stitches them back together to make one clip.
