Spanned clips that aren't really spanned?

My apologies if this has been covered before, but when I'm ingesting P2 footage, I'm regularly getting the message that the clips are spanned, even though they aren't. It hasn't seemed to cause me any problems, but I'm just wondering why it's giving me that message and if I should be concerned. Thanks...

They may very well be spanned, if they're long clips. If a clip size exceeds 4GB, the camera will automatically "span" them to the next clip. 4GB is the maximum file size in FAT32, which is the format the P2 card uses.

i recently encountered this and had issues with my log and transfer / fcp 6.0.
After nights of figuring out a work around (i think Barry suggested this), i ended up dragging the mxf files into time line which gave me other issues when compressed using compressor 2. I eventually figured out that the first few seconds of my SPANNED clip, first minute, was causing my log and transfer to fail. I set my In point past the trouble area and my outpoint and everything seemed to have transferred OK. My SPANNED clip was a 45 minute clip- one shot. As Barry pointed out- long clips will generate this SPANNED message.

So, you had no issues with log and transfer? WOW. Not sure what happened with mine.

So is this SPANNED message expected every time we shoot a long shot- say something like 45 minutes? I'll have to test this out myself and see if i can generate the same issue i had with log and transfer with another 50 minutes clip.

Barry - thanks for the information. That makes good sense--I won't worry about the spanned messages now.

mcvideo -- sorry for the log and capture troubles on your end. I've never - knock on wood - had that problem on long clips. I shoot a lot of seminars with long blocks of uninterrupted time, so hopefully it won't happen, and hopefully it won't happen to you again.
