Spanking the noise in F6

I like scene F6 for its latitude, but I find it quite a bit noisey in dark area...

So what are people doing to reduce the noise in camera or in post.

I tried some noise reduction software but it makes the footage soft and patchey (like someone has gone over it with a pencil rubber)

basically what are the magic parameters?

Yes, the latitude of cinelike-D comes at a price, and that's that it is the noisiest of the gamma curves. cinelike-V has a contrastier picture but less noise.

If you want to stick with cinelike-D but want less grain, you can crank up the detail coring and lower the detail level, which will mask the appearance of some of the noise.

I'm still not sure what all of the weirder scene file settings (like detail coring) do. Do you cover that stuff in your upcoming book, Barry?

Every bit of it, yes. And coring is a tool for minimizing the appearance of noise. The higher you set coring, the less visible the noise will be (although at the expense of also softening some high-frequency detail).
