Spankin New HVX Music Video

Aquariusdude,
Did you say that you were primarily handheld on this or did you have a stabiliser?

Thanks for the comments, all the work was handheld by Mr. Jason Hafer himself, I will say that shooting slowmo and handheld on the HVX really gives it a fluid nice look.

Hey guys Im not that great with compression, if you could tell me how to do this I would be happy to oblige you, we're just filmmakers the whole compression and internet thing is a different world for us. If you could give us step by step instructions that would be great!!

Well.. For something that costs money, which it will in either case, I'd recommed Sorenson Squeeze, a universal encoding piece of software which can convert from anything to anything. From just about any format to QT, Windows Media, RealPlayer, MPEG2 (wee), Flash video (yeepie), you name it. There is also a compressor from EDIUS but I haven't found it to be as good, personally.

Now, a cheaper solution would be QuickTime Pro. You can, of course, only encode from, and to QuickTime files, but it's useful, especially when you need to export a clip into an image sequence, like TIFFs. Only $29.99 after all. Don't waste the money on that Narnia DVD, buy QT Pro. For PC, apart from QT Pro, there is a set of tools from RAD Video but it's not as reliable. I always have problems exporting audio. QT Pro is much simplier, albeit slower than Sorenson Squeeze.

As to Windows Media Video - if you have a PC, you can get a WMV Encoder for free off Microsoft. If you're on OSX... I don't know, frankly. I don't own a mac.

Hope that helps.

"But I don't think you or I will see film die in our life time."

I disagree....Ask the majority of still photographers where their film cameras are. I love film, I think it's beautiful, but in 10 years it will be as nostalgic to shoot on as 8mm. With new High Dynamic range cameras from such film greats as Arri and Panavision on the horizon. The future DP will have more options than ever to achieve any look imaginable.

Maybe.. Maybe not.. There are still vinyls sold and bought, and there are still bands recording to tape. It's just.. vintage "warm" technology some still choose to stick with. I'm sure it will disappear someday, hopefully not, but not in 10 years.

Brian,
The video is AWSOME, remember in the KUSI days how we loved lens flares?! So Cool how you sequenced everything as well.

Thanks Todd, I owe alot to my awesome editor Dave he did a great job editing this video. Ahhhh yes the KUSI days how could I forget. Call me up sometime well grab a beer.

Extremely well put together. I honestly felt that washed out look aided to the over all feel very nicely and never felt it lost its affect. Anyhow the quality and colors were great!

This video rocked on all cylinders.
At first I thought Keanu Reeves was in a new band.

Was there some compositing work done on this? Is the guy in the blue shirt that is being chased actually the same guy in the cheap suit?

The shots of the lead singer beside the train? was the camera mounted to the singer or what. It seemed like the requiem for a dream shot, but slower. I really liked that look.
Great job on the video. Does the band like it. what about the label.

Amazing, but boring. I found myself more interested with the two men chasing eachother, and whenever the band was singing, I felt like it was interupting the 'story'. The ending was also fairly inconclusive, I didn't feel as if anything got resolved, and nothing made any sense.

Oye.. everyones a critic.. I still think it kept my attention the whole time, and it looked amazing.. I was very happy that it was handheld.. Most stuff I see on here and that I have done, has been pretty steady.. ROCK ON!!

Hey everybody thanks for the comments, ProjX v2.0 yeah we did a bit of compositing the keanu reeves looking guy "Brad" was chasing himself we had him run on one side then run on the other. Sponester how we got that Requiem look which is funny you mention requiem because thats one of my favorite movies, we shot it all handheld but the train was going by behind him so it gave it a really strange look, but there was no mounts or anything just dual motion.

Re:

I just have to say that I really enjoyed this music video. I am in preproduction for a feature I plan to do this summer (my first, which will probably fall flat on it's face), and this video has definitely convinced me to rent this camera over the more expensive XL-H1. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!
