Got up last Friday at 3:30am to drive to NASA, then take their shuttle (after hours of waiting/dragging gear in lines) to the NASA causeway 6.5 miles from the launch pad.
This is the closest the public can get, and only a limited number of people get tickets through a lottery for this vantage point.
But it was all for naught, as the launch was scrubbed due to faulty heaters on one of the auxiliary power units. The launch was scrubbed just as I'd set up my AF100 and HPX170 (CU/WS) and 2 tripods.
I grabbed a few quick (very quick) shots as they were making people board the buses to return.
It was a very ugly day- skies were completely blown out, and the strong winds were blowing spray from the waves into the air adding mist to the noon day sun. Not a good filming (or launch, I would think) day.
I tried to recover some of the skies in grading, but it appears the Shuttle and Vehicle Assembly Building are a bit hot (but not on the WFM, dangit!). I'm still adjusting to Premiere after moving over from Avid.
I posted the day before the launch on not getting the Canon 300mm EF to manually focus (it's focus-by-wire, evidently).
So this is shot on the EF 70-200 2.8L with a 2x extender.
I plan to go back for the second launch attempt May 10 or later.
Hope it's successful and that the weather's better...
