I've had my HP XW8400 for quite a while, always with XP Service Pack 2. Encore CS4 requires SP3 if you wish to install. So I installed SP 3 from a download I did on another computer (the 8400 is not connected to net).
Thankfully I did a System Restore point before the "upgrade" to SP3.
Normally the computer used to boot thru a black & white screen which asked "which operating system to start" either; Microsoft WIN XP Professional Avid 2.7 or Microsoft WIN XP...all with a countdown timer that would run you thru the Avid if you did nothing. It would then go to the Windows start up screen (blue bar) and eventually boot to windows where I could start to edit/work.
Now with SP3, it hangs on a black screen (I've let it sit a 1/2 hour) after the Windows Startup screen. Very unreliable.
I went to an earlier state thru System Restore (prior to SP3) and all is well. I try re-installing SP 3 and get the hang problem. If I have SP3 installed, and go thru SAFE MODE, sometimes it will reboot fine when restarted other times crap out.
I installed SP3 on my other Avid (xw8200) one that does not have that goofy SELECT OPERATING SYSTEM TO START, and if fires up fine ....
So my only conclusion is that SP3 hates the SELECT OPERATING SYSTEM TO START on the 8400. Anyone with a similar experience? Any ideas how I can upgrade safely to SP3 so I can install ENCORE CS4?
