SP 1080 24p mode...

I just worked on a project for a client where we needed to shoot in SP 1080 24p. What I didn't realize was that the EX-3 creates a 29.97 file, not a 23.976. It adds a pulldown to the clip, and I'm looking at the best way to remove that pulldown to get the frame rate to 23.98 - suggestions?

If you open the clip up in PPro or Clip Browser, it comes in at 59.94i or 29.97...not 23.976.

Basically you have an HDV type file with a 1.33 PAR (1440 width) too.

After Effects can remove pull down. Just right-click on the footage, go to "Interpret Footage" and hit guess 3:2 pulldown. As long as your clip is a continuous take, it'll do the job every time (it will have a problem if you stop and start shooting again within a clip, because the pulldown cadence may change).

Neoscene can do it fairly automatically, but that's another program to buy.

Or if you don't have those and want a free way of doing it, go with the AviSynth/VirtualDubMod method.

Most methods work most, but not all, of the time.

Final method is to find someone with a Nanoflash (or rent one). Those can can be set strip out the pull down automatically and give several formats for output.

Thanks, Duke for the response. However, AE isn't getting it right - it's saying the frame rate is 19 fps.

As for NeoScene, I tried that too, but it doesn't work the MP4 files that the EX cameras create.

I've already shot the footage, and now the client wants them to be converted to 23.98 so they'll have an easier time converting to PAL.

I always use the free Sony program and convert MP4 clips to MXF clips before using in CS3 programs. The MXF clips work fine and it only takes a few seconds to convert. I believe it just puts them in a new wrapper rather than any real conversion.
