Source Code - Duncan Jones follow up to Moon

Bot gets girl back...You mean he makes an android to get his girlfriend back? I smell a blockbuster.

How about boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl, who is kinda slutty. Boy gets tired of waiting for slutty girl to be less slutty and moves on. Girl realizes she loves boy who now doesn't love her. Girl tries to control boy who thinks he loves other girl but is just deluding himself. Girl and boy finally get together, but boy is drafted into interstellar war. While away, girl is misinformed that boy died by being eaten by giant alien bug and then excreted out bug's backside to be used as material for a bug hive, as the bugs use the dead to build new nests.

Boy is not dead, returns, and finds that girl is now woman with dorky husband and three wild kids. Boy is pissed so he steals a bit of girl's hair to take to an illegal cloning facility, since in this wondrous future clones are an everyday reality. Boy has girl cloned and tries to have her conditioned (brainwashed/programmed) to be as close as possible to his original girlfriend.

This works pretty well, but when clone girl finds out what she is, she goes ballistic and tries to kill original girl and take her place. Boy must use military skills to save his real love, and in the process kills the clone who is the closest thing to his real love that he will have. He prevents the clone girl from killing the woman and taking her place, but is arrested in the process by a robo-police patrol unit (not Robocop, cause he was a cyborg) called to the scene by nosy neighbors who will be a whole wacky subplot in and of themselves. Boy is arrested, and sentenced to hard offworld labor, or he can re-enlist in the extrasolar military because he has those awesome military skills used earlier. He re-enlists and is sent back to kill hostile alien bugs in never ending alien bug war. Boy is killed in action and used as organic mortar for a bug dwelling.

Call it... BOY KILLS BUGS AND LOVES GIRL

In 3D IMAX.

Source Code was again, a rather well laid out film that depicts the depravity of corporate entities' control over mankind. It was a brilliant film, but the problem with the film was the casting, whoever the casting director was needed to be strung up by the tezzers (Testicles).

Jake G is a good actor I really like him, but he went at this film with a broomstick when all he needed was a toothbrush, I really didn't sympathise with the guy that much and while I agree this could be due to lack of backstory with the character, the first hurdle is the lead. And I genuinely do not believe Gylenhaal had the cheese to cut the pizza.

But this movie was, fundamentally brilliant...

And don't mock the Moon man, Moon was an all round masterpiece mate, perfect in its simplicity. Yes it more than likely missed a few little tricks, I (as probably many of you), picked up in parts where they could have gone with a story arc that could have been more exciting or thrilling, but I tried (and did), to watch this film as a film nut first, and as a film maker second.

Duncan Jones, is one of a few up and coming British Directors who has really turned my schwede (head)... I think his next choice of project is imperical to his future career and I for one hope that he steers clear of big budget "SCIENCE FICTION" and stays on the indi-sci-fi.

Loved the comment about Duncan meeting Hollywood, classic statement!

it had to be jake gylenhaal because that's like his own personality as a person and as an actor -- pretentious, like he sends people on missions back in time himself... I dunno, I can't really explain why so. nothing to do with brokeback mountain.

Have you ever watched a movie, and while everyone else was raving, you kept thinking, "What's the big deal?" That's my relationship with Source Code.

I felt no real urgency throughout the whole movie.

A solid rental. But not worth the theater experience in my opinion.

I agree. SC was good, but not great. I kind of felt let down, like there was literally nothing more to the movie than what was in the trailer. And the ending really annoyed me because like a lot of movies I've seen recently, it went on far longer than it should have.

Still, solid direction, fine acting, good storyline. It just felt kind of basic. Also, the whole thing looked greenscreened for some reason - I can't imagine they'd actually greenscreen something that simple, but it honestly looked that way. Maybe Jones was going for a surrealistic look and it just didn't play well.

I should first say I went into the cinema almost falling asleep so my reaction to the movie may well be skewed.

That said, I thought the movie was stagnate from the start, I literally didn't even like the opening credit shots.

The only thing I liked about the movie was seeing Michelle Monahagn (sp?) on the bigscreen again.

2/5.

I'd pay to see that.

I read the script for Source Code before I saw it, which was a rarity for me. It was featured on ScriptShadow a while back under its original title (whatever that was).

I thought the story was a little hollow, lacking something, and the ending just made zero sense.

That said, the movie turned out better than I imagined it would from the script. I liked the Chicago trains, which were double height and gave a sense of power and ferocity. The original train (into NYC) is one I had actually ridden my share of and wasn't so impressive or filmic.

I thought the officer who spoke to him over the telecom would be male for some reason, and so the choice of Vera Farmiga was pretty welcome, and a surprise.

There was this sense of dread throughout the second half that it could only end as a tragedy. There was no logical way to end it otherwise.

Then the writer tacks on the Hollywood dream factory finish -- and it's a real eye roller. I wouldn't mind seeing the Europeans pulling a Hollywood rip-off and re-doing it where the world actually makes logical sense (if that's even conceivable in this thing). That would be justice, seeing all the European films that are stolen and mutilated by the Californians.

(Yes, I AM cynical of Hollywood.)

According to IMDb, it's a French / American co-production directed by a Brit...

I guess it's not surprising, though, since Hollywood can't come up with new material...

Actually they come up with new material non-stop. They choose to bet their big film budgets on things that are less risky from a business standpoint. Original material isn't the problem.

I liked it. I pretty much agree with Roger Ebert's review, which I read after seeing the movie. Sci Fi works for me when it makes me think and relate with our world's issues. Source Code is an interesting film which focuses in complex themes- by complex I don't mean the "sci-fi", time travelling and reality creating aspect of the film- but on ethics, on life after death, on "soul" and other complex human emotions. Its by no means a "Persona" level film of self descovery, but its a film that rises beyond the generic blockbusters of this summer. Probably the closest to an Inception experience one is going to have this Blockbuster season.
