Sound

Yeah I'm new to this camera, and I'm doing a lot of things wrong, I just cant figure them out. I can't get any sound when I film. I just got an Azden SGM 2x today, and still nothing.
Where the inputs are, here is what they are set to:
Mic Cable is in Input 1. Under where it says CH-2, the switch is to the right, on Input 1. The Audio Input switch is MIC+48V. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, and what else I need to do? Also, will the sound play when I preview the video on the camera?

switch the CH-2 back to the left to Input 2. That should do ya good. You will only be recording one channel of audio but you dont need more since capturing more would take up useless space on your PC.

The Azden is battery powered and should be set to Mic, not +48. The bottom switch is for phantom power. Make sure your audio monitor is turned up and not off or you won't hear anything on camera. Are you seeing movement on the meters?

When you set the channel 2 switch to input one it puts your mic on both channels. I often use this and set channel 2 a little lower in case I accidentally peak the audio, I might still have it on channel 2.

good luck!

it still isnt working. i also tried it with the mic that the camera came with. is there anything else that I need to do either on the menu on the monitor, or on the other side of the camera?

You may indeed have a bad audio component. Are the meters turned on in the menu? Rule out that you aren't getting audio but just aren't hearing it. I did have that problem with one channel and have to send it in for that.

how do you adjust the meters in the menu, i dont see them. also,

The adjustments for the meters are on the out side of the camera the meters are in your view finder.

Yeah I figured everything out, but I'm not happy with the mic. It has too much of a broadcast sound that would belong on a news camera or something. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good mic to buy that would actually sound like a movie, rather than a live broadcast? It's not loud or deep enough. There is a trailer at www.theragefilm.com shot on an HD100, but their sound is excellent, as mine sounds like some cheap local news coverage.

the stock mic is junk. you need a hyper and and a shotgun mic to do indoors and out.

I'm familiar with the Azden and I know what you mean. It doesn't have an "open" sound to it...it sounds kind of dull. Unfortunately, good and cheap doesn't come easy. The best you'll do at a cheap price is the Audio-Technica AT897.
