Sound went bad in middle of clip

We were shooting a local dance recital last weekend and the "safe" camera sound went bad all on it's own. My wife said to me, "Something is wrong with the sound." I put on her headphones and sure enough, some kind of distortion was present. This camera had a Rode Videomic, just to use as a back up and syncing source with the other camera planned as primary audio. I powered the Rode mic off and back on, no change. I switched to the internal mics, no change. I switched back to the Rode mic and I swapped headphones just to be sure, no change, still messed up. I reseated the connectors between the mic and camera, still bad. In final desperation, powered the cam off and back on, Presto Bingo, problem fixed.

This has me a little worried, that the sound went bad in the middle of a shoot and the only "fix" was to power cycle the camera.

I pulled out a couple short examples of the bad audio and rendered mp3 and wav files for anyone who cares to give a listen.

The pops, pings, and pongs are when I was switching to the internal mics, and then finally the "after poweroff/on" sound.

Sounds like some kind of digital interference. Could it be that the video mic uses aN unbalanced line which would make it more prone to interference.

I suppose it could be interference from another source, but when I switched both channels to the internal microphone, I would have expected that to go away. It also seems strange that powereing the CAM off and on, made it go away. I'm grasping at straws... All my thinking says it was internal to the camera, not external, but that's why I'm tossing this out fro others to think on also.

We used the same setup for a recital this weekend and everything worked just fine.
