what kind of sound tracks do you use? I mean the music and sound effects? do you know a place where I can download free or low cost music and sound?

i was thinking about this as well. Last night i got on a Mac with "soundtrack" the software. It was awsome! you use loops and plugins and just fuse them together to create very cool soundtracks.

also fruity loops studio is good

I compose and perform my own soundtrack(s). I suggest trying it at least once since it's a great learning experience and it's fun.

I don't want to hear negative, but making your own soundtrack music is extremely hard task. And I'm mostly now talking about orchestral film music. Although it's totally possible to do real orchestra scores with computers nowadays (like EW QL and Vienna stuff), nothing has really changed the actual composing of music. You really have to know what you are doing. You have to know how to write to orchestra. There's no way out of that.

And when you are doing your music all by yourself, the actual composing is only the start. Then you have to do all the sequencing, mixing and mastering also. There are a very few people who can really handle all of these steps of making professional sounding music. It takes years and years to master these skills. It's like doing double work, when you are doing orchestral stuff with computer. It's easier to write for a real orchestra, that's no secret.

Very well put Pete
I have gone down this road as a hack musican on my own projects, and find it harder than the whole film production. A composer is a great allie to making a film from good to great.

What kind of instruments and recording equipment do you usually use for that?

A keyboard, drum machine, MIDI sequencer, various guitars and an amp for instruments. For recording, just my computer (it's a cheap self-built digital audio workstation) with n-track Studio (a cheap, $25 version of professional recording software like SONAR and ProTools). Even though it is cheap, it is EXTREMELY good.

Anyway, I should also mention that I am a musician and sound engineer FIRST, and a filmmaker SECOND. Which probably explains why I have an easier time composing and recording music than most of you guys do.

Yes, it is hard, but if you work dilligently and intelligently, it does get easier the more you do it. As mentioned above, I'm a musician and sound engineer, so it makes my job a little easier than someone who's experienced with filmmaking.

If anyone wants to see my work, go here . Not really a good film in the overall scheme of things, but I think it's good for a first film (yea, the very first I wrote and directed). It was for a class, and I had a much better idea for a short film, but one of my actors didn't want to do that one, so I wrote this one up in an hour, and had to handle roughly 20 minutes of rewriting to fit the budget. The comment that comes up the most that I've heard is how much better the music is compared to the actual film.

I seriously do think that making good soundtrack music is easily one of the hardest part of the whole film production process...if those different processes can be even compared...And now I'm talking again about the great orchestral music stuff...Music really gives the soul and feeling to the movie.

I'm also a musician and audio guy. I'm just starting to introduce myself to the "video-world".

"It's not about how much gears you have, it's all about the musical ideas." That is so true. Less is more.
