Sound Setup for No Budget Feature

- Mic #1 Audio Technica AT875r Shotgun Mic
- Wireless - Sennheiser Evolution G2 Wireless
- Mic #2 - Countryman B6 Lav Mic

I was wondering if this would work ? I got my shotgun Mic on a boom or on the camera if I need it. From the AT875 into the H4 with phantom power on. Everythings cool so far, right ? Then could I also have the B6 from the Senn G2 wireless plugged into another input in the H4 and recording another channel of audio at the same time ? I need the Phantom Power on to work with the B6 with the G2 unit ? I can't plug directly into the D90, and I will have to sync the audio later. The D90 does record it's own audio though, so I should be able to match it.

This would give me 3 audio tracks at once. Would all this work or any suggestions ? I'm spending way more cheese on Audio than on anything else. Any input is a plus, thanks.

Even with the D90 onboard audio, your workflow might be simpler if you slate.

It seems like you've got the gear stuff figured out.

Yeah, I was going to buy a slate to make all the syncing easier. I just wanted to make sure this setup would work and all that. Thanks though

Covering the action with one lav and one boom if you have more than two people talking during the same take can be tricky. Not impossible, shooting angle dependent. Just be aware that two actors, one on boom and the other on lav can sound weird depending on the blocking and the acoustics.

Doing it without a mixer is definitely "commando style." You'll want to listen to everything going into the recorder to make sure you're getting it right. That will be a little difficult because you're not really mixing, you're recording isolated tracks. That means you'll have some manipulation to do in post. Get room tone on every setup, even reverses, if any mic position changes.

If the B6 is wireless it doesn't require phantom power.

Can't plug what into the D90?

Can't plug decent sound into the D90. Garbage in garbage out on DSLRs. That's the tradeoff with a $900 solution for the 35mm look.

Your systems seems like it will work. Run both the D90 audio & the Zoom audio. Just have someone clap their hands in front of the camera for slating if you need a real cheap slate and call out the scene & take #. The B6 will get power from the G2.

In the edit the D90 audio will be your guide track. Just slide L/R the Zoom tracks to match the D90 tracks and then mute the D90 track. Set levels between lav and boom, and you should have something happening.

PS: Aim the mic directly at the source like you're pointing a gun trying to shoot the audio source. Get the boom mic as close as possible to the sound source w/o being in the shot. 3 feet or more away from the subject's mouth is often too far.

You might want to consider turning off sound capture on the D90, if that's possible, and just synch from the H4 in post by using the clapper (or person clapping their hands) as a visual reference. I only suggest that because you might get more video footage on the SD card if you're not including audio.

Just a thought.

I just bought my d90 tonight from B&H. Step 1 done. Music videos on the way. :) Gonna take a lil bit longer to get all my sound stuff, but i'm excited. Thanks for all the input on this thread.
