Sound problem

So I was out in the park this evening shooting some nature clips. I wasn't interested in the audio so I didn't wear my headphones. When I got home and played back the last clips at some point I started to hear a metalic sound and some hiss mixed with the location audio. It's like it was coming through a pipe.

I put my headphones on and turned on the camera. It seems the problem is gone. I recorded another clip, played it back and everything is ok.

Does anyone know what might have happened? It's back to normal now but I wouldn't like it to happen on an important shoot.

Did you use the build in mic or an external mic? Did your VU peaked?

It is always better to use an external mic like a shotgun mic and to be sure to don't saturate the microphone itself with loud sounds. Also, to look at the VU to be sure that nothing peaks.

I used the build in mic. I wasn't paying attention to the VU because I wasn't interested in the sound but as I recall there weren't any loud sounds, I was just shooting some peacocks behind a mesh wire pen, surrounded by a bunch of other people.

I've never really touched the audio controls since I bought the camera because I use a separate recorder and mic, which was not the case in this situation. I use the camera audio just to sync the recorder track.

Ok. You can make some tests, and, if you can, always use an external mic for critical shooting, if your not using a separate recorder.

But the build in mic can be ok for non critical situations. You weird sound may be caused by the shooting location and situation. But you would get a better sound with an external mic, probably.

This sounds similar to my issue today - I've had my HMC-150 since May 2011. I have been using it a lot. I have never had any audio issues. Used it 5 times this week in several different locations and today, on the 8th clip of shooting in the same location (a house) it started in a minute into the clip. The digital crackling, scratching, millisecond drop out if you will, began and lasted into a second 16 gig class 10 card and only stopped after I checked one clip and heard it, then it was gone after that. all my interviews and b-roll were ruined. the last 10 clips on the second card were fine. I monitored every single clip while I was shooting and all sounded fine and the levels were solid. I was using different audio configs, shotgun mic, sennheiser wireless lavs, shotgun on boom pole, audio from channel 2 going to both channels, desperate channels, etc. The problem was consistent throughout the clips.

The only new thing I introduced this week was I turned on ALC. I had no sound problems using the camera that way for four days. All of my footage sounded fine with it on until today. I even recorded in the same location yesterday and no issues. NOTE: I was using another card, different brand, but class 10. All three of my cards have never given me any trouble in this camera though. The two cards on which the issue occurred are the same brand. I can't remember the brand because I have them at my office right now, but will check and let you know tomorrow.

I am going to have to pay to rent another camera, pay for the producer to take a later flight home and of course not charge her for the make up day.

Do any of you have information on the issue? Have you had any problems with your HMC-150? Has Panasonic addressed this issue? I find it hard to believe this is an SD card issue.

Could it possibly be interference with wi-fi or RF? If so, why wouldn't I have heard it while monitoring recording?

This is an issue I can not have, I make my living with this camera.

Thanks for your info, it will help me solve this problem.

I can confirm the same issue on HMC151 and the internal mic.

A while ago while shooting outside, one of the clips (my luck it was a test) had this metallic noise, totaly unusable. The only thing I can imagine that could have done it was humidity. I had it on my back in a pretty small bag. I was reaaalllyy swetting and was totaly wet on my back, and the bag was wet inside. Maybe some of my juice got into the mic... I don't know, but this is the only time I've had issues with the HMC sound.

I think it's an SD card issue. I have one 32GB class 6 Transcend SD card on which every time when I filming on this card has been appeared picture and sound distorsion on only one position which duration is 2-3 sec. This distortion is always within the one clip and sound/picture before and after this position is OK. I tested the card with few available software and every one said it's OK. I have 6 16GB class 6 and 10 Transcend card and I never had similar problems with them! Conclusion: this 32GB card have some strange issue and I use it only in photo camera without any problem :)
