I need some advise on what sound recording equipment should I buy that matches quality of DVX100A and will not make me sell my soul to affor it. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hey buzne,

First thing to keep in mind mic wise is that you can't get one end all mic that will handle any and all situations. There are tons of different mics out there for tons of different recording situations. If you are recording straight into the DVX and want a camera mountable shotgun mic that you could also put on a boom pole if you wanted, I would say go with the Sennheiser ME-66. It has a fairly narrow pickup pattern and sounds pretty good. Once you get the power capsule for it, you can switch out mics to get different pickup patterns without selling your soul for a whole new one. If you want to go with an external recorder, I would recommend going with something from marantz like their PMD-670 recorder. It would also be a good idea to have a few lavs thrown in the mix, such as the ones offered by countryman. Another thing that will come in handy if your recording to an external device is a clapper slate. This will make syncing your sound MUCH easier in post. Remember one thing though, do not skimp on your mic. That's where the sound starts...skimp on that, and you're skimping on your sound. Also, a nice set of headphones are a must for accurate monitoring of your audio. Alot of people use the Sony MDR-7506's. They are pretty much the industry standard, and can be had for around 99 bucks. Sennheiser makes a set called the HD-280's that are also really good, they come in at around 80bucks from B&H. Hope this helps!

Another good set of earphones are the Shure in ear systems. Lots of musicians use these on stage as well as in the studio as monitors, and I have used mine in the field. They yield great results and I have also found them to be very accurate. They come in around $100 and get more expensive for the higher quality pairs, but I like the low profile and ease of travel with them. They even come with their own case that can even fit in your pocket, which is always a plus :)

G'day, i have just bought some mics. if you want a really good mic but cant affort the sennheiser then i would suggest going with a Rode mic. they are new, and ahte half the price of a sennheiser.
the RODE NTG! is like the sennheiser me66.
it costs $380 here in Australia. i tihnk that is about $200USD, but ou would have to look it up.
i went with the me66.
good luck

Yeah, I have a friend that has the NTG1 and its a pretty darn good mic. I think they have a powered and unpowered version...and one is just a bit longer. BH sells kits that include a short XLR cable and shockmount and windscreen for pretty cheap, I forgot to mention this mic, completely forgot about it....it's deffinetly decent. I have heard there are pretty cheap mics made by a russian company called Octava that are pretty good too....I have no idea where to get them though.

me -66 rode nt

me -66 rode nt

I have not used the rode prosomer shotgun but I do know that the sennheiser me 66 is garbage. Pay for quality and I suggest using a mixer or 2nd recporeder the dvx is tricky when running sound straight to it via xlr. a minor tap and ur levels can gp crazy.
opt for a Sanken cs-1 if u want to be thrifty.Betteryet get a cds 3 or a neumann kmr 81.
