sound only coming from one side of headphones

Hi,

I record my audio on an edirol r-44 field recorder. I plug in a single XLR microphone to the 1/L socket. When I try and listen to my audio I can only hear sound on the left side of my headphones? When I listen to my audio in premiere pro there also appeares to be only audio in the left hand channel. I am presently using the 2-channel stereo mode, but I have also tried the mono settings and nothing seems to work!

Can I replicated the L to the R channel in post?

When you edit, you should have a "pan" control for the audio. Simply move that to "center." Or, if it has a numerical scale (like FCP does, from -1 to +1), move it to 0.

That is normal. If you record something on only one channel of a stereo track, then you will hear it on only one channel. If you hear it on both channels, then something is wrong.

Yes, of course it is expected that you will take your various audio tracks and place them wherever you wish during editing. In Premiere, look for the "Fill Right" and "Fill Left" Audio features. They duplicate the sound in both sides.

Dupe the track in post or better yet pan it to center in post. Easy enough. You can also use a XLR splitter to run the mic to both tracks in the recorder. Just take your pick of what easiest. No right or wrong, they all end at the same result.

With the R-44 or R-4 pro, you will always hear channel 1 & 3 in your left ear and 2 & 4 in your right.

If you record in "MONO x 1" mode, the file will be a mono file and drop into your NLE or DAW as a mono file and play in both speakers. If you are going to record only one channel there is no reason to record it as a stereo file because it just makes work later. Even if I record 4 tracks I do it as "MONO x 4" so I have the most flexibility later.
