I'm considering the purchase of a steadicam (undecided in regards to model.) I haven't seen anyone use a steadicam while wearing headphones to monitor sound. Is this possible? If you have, what did you do to counter the effects of being teathered to the camera?
When I do stedicam work with XLR's and video feed running out, I tuck a section of the cords in my belt behind me with enough slack in-between the camera and my belt, then you have a grip wrangle the cords so no one is tripping over them.
This although may not work in the one situation that your going to be panning the camera over 360 degrees a few times or something, otherwise its always worked great for me. Plus it works well since the same guy that's wrangling your cords can also direct your movement and marks while holding onto your shirt or belt.
Then again, using wireless transmitters would be a ton easier.
As for monitoring the audio, I will wear a set of head phones just to double check the audio, even while on stedicam (although I sometimes find it a bit distracting and dont always like monitoring the audio while trying to concentrate on an important shot) but the boom operator should always be on top of the levels with a field mixer anyway.
