sound mixer/recorder selection

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Edirol R-4 4-channel recorder/mixer. I was seriously thinking about purchasing this product for some ultra-low/no budget features but I recently saw the Sound Devices 552, which is a 5-channel mixer/recorder for $500 more.

One major difference between the two is that the Edirol seems to be able to generate as well as sync-to timecode, whereas the Sound Devices 552 can only sync-to incoming timecode. But the 552 has one additional channel than the R-2.

Any experience or ideas about this is greatly appreciated !

Thanks all!

It all depends do you think you will need that many inputs? How many mics do you plan on using/running? I will definitely say consider the Sound Devices I finally got a chance to use one and the sound is amazing. I'm saving up now for either a 702T or Fostex FR-2.

And the R-4 is a 4-channel recorder with limited mixing capabilities

Are the mixing capabilities "good enough" for most situations...or are the mixing capabilities of the Sound Devices 552 that much better?

I think I would need just basic mixing capability, nothing too fancy, and the 4-channel recorder would be really nice to have -

Thanks!
