Sound levels too low

I was hoping someone could help me. I am having issues with my Dx100A and the sound levels. The on camera mic seems fine but when I connect an external mic the levels are completely low. I am using a "Y" XLR cable and I am switching the controls to input 1 and imput 2. Is there anything else I need to do?:angry:
 
How about the line/mic switches, are set to mic input? Microphone input voltages are much lower than line level signal.
 
Good point. Also, keep in mind that different types of mics have different sensitivity. In the recording setup menu you'll find an option for mic level of -50 or -60; try that and see if it makes a difference.
 
thank you for the response. The batteries on the external lav were depleded and i think that also added to the problem. I just tested again and we are back in business.:cheesy:
