Sound in Headphones sounds phased?

I'm your basic DVX100a newbie and have done two shoots with the camera. The thing that seems funny to me is that the audio sounds totally whacked while monitoring audio while recording. But sounds appropriate in editing.

I never heard anything like that with either the XL1s or other lower end consumer gear.

Another guy that has been using the DVX longer than me told me that "that is just the way it is."

Is that correct? or have I missed something huge in setup?

Thanks,

Rob

Re: Sound in Headphones sounds phased?

In a nutshell: It has something to do with the pulldown process as the 24p image is being laid to tape as 60i creating a delay.

The reason you never heard such in a 'XL-numb ass' or *other* low end consumer gear is because they are not capable of the magic of recording 24p.

For a more technical explanation I yield to Barry Green.

Kick it one time, BG...   ;) ;D ...or anyone else who's feelin' it.

Re: Sound in Headphones sounds phased?

Terry's right.  What's happening is that in the original DVX100, audio was recorded live straight to tape as it occurred, whereas to implement the 2:3 pulldown necessary to record 24P images on a 60i recording medium, the video would get buffered for a frame or two before being written to tape.

The result was that on the DVX100, if you shoot in 24P mode, the audio and video are actually out of sync by about 2 frames.  The audio leads the video, because the video got delayed when being written out.

In the DVX100A they fixed it by adding a 2-frame delay circuit in the audio, so the audio now gets buffered just like the video.  So when you hear the audio through the headphones, it's delayed by 1/30th of a second from what you're hearing live.  If you had absolutely pure isolation headphones, you should notice no irregularities, but if you can hear the live sound at all, then yes, you'll hear what sounds like out-of-phase recording because the DVX100A audio coming out of the headphone jack will have been delayed by 1/30th of a second.
