Sound fx

Where do you all get your sound fx from? More specifically gun shots and action oriented sounds, But also ambient loops too.

Google will turn up lots. One well-respected site is SoundDogs.com. For ambient tracks, record your own. Go to the location and have at it.

sound FX as guns, explosions, army-stuff, helicopters, are recorded on the field (or in a shooting-range). But that's a big organisation to do...

And I also know this only by seeing pictures of people I know doing this.

Most of it I recorded. But Sound Ideas, and Hollywood Edge have pretty good libraries and Sonic Boom has a set just on guns and gun handling.

Gun's I haven't recorded much because I was in the SF Bay Area and the options locally were pretty limited. Now in the wooly wilds of Michigan I'm looking forward to recoding more weapons and explosions.

The two keys to recording are first almost nothing sounds like it looks. This is important for safety also. If you have a high speed chase and your doing the cars the last thing you want is a bunch of recordings of cars going really fast. This leads into the second big thing which is break down the track or the "sound" to it's components and record the components. The reason is you will never do it all in one And make it sound just the way you want AND have it sync up correctly. Also it's a lot more useful to the components so you can assemble them in different way to build different sounds.

So for that car chase you want high engine revs, and pass bys, int gear shifting, peel out tire chirps, cornering tire squeals and probably some skids and suspension "bumps". You don't want to do any of that above say 40 and most can be done quite a bit slower.

I have several commercial sound fx libraries, I've recorded a bunch of stuff, and I have a bunch of custom recorded stuff that I did trades for my custom recorded stuff for. You'll build it up slowly over time.
