I know its been asked alot but..... im looking for a field recorder.... im shooting a short this summer so i need something that is awesome for sound... i herd about the zoom h4n, can you use this device for a boom shotgun mic? thank you...

You want something that's awesome for sound, but your question is if you can skip buying a decent microphone?

The cool thing about the H4N is you can use its built-in stereo mic AND put two inputs into it as well, so on my last shoot I captured the room with built-ins, had a boom mic in another input and using a mixer, had two wireless lavalieres going into input 4. They're coming out with an 8 channel portable though, the R24, so you can have a whole bunch of channels (and built-in mics). The built-in mic is good for capturing music at a show and stuff like that, but I ended up using just the sound from the boom, so that'll most likely be your best bet.

awesome sound does not just come from a recorder. you need a good mic, placed properly, by someone who knows how to use it in a good location that isn't full of echo, free from outside noise contamination and with levels being constantly monitored(in ears and by watching the VU meters) using good headphones.

all the mid range recorders(h4n, dr100, marantz, etc..) can record great audio but it takes some finesse to get them there.

my advise? two options.

option A
hire a sound guy

option B, and this is for whomever is going to be doing sound for your short. if its you, joe bob or who ever, they need to:
1. read every sticky in the sound section
2. buy the dvxuser sound for film & tv dvd
3. watch that dvd 5 times at least
4. research recorders and mics by searching dvxuser
5. rent, borrow, whatever mid to high end gear they can. do not waste your money buying sound gear just for a short. its cheaper in the long end to rent, and you get better gear. trewaudio.com is a good place to start.
