Sound Devices Rumors???

Just got an email from TrewAudio with a MixPre 6 price of $899 US.
Plus the power sled.

Both are significantly lighter than the current mixpre-d.

I think these mixers will be good for adding decent audio to one man band mirrorless camera shoots. I can't see these competing with the 633, though. The touch screen would be a real pain for run and gun situations. The wingman app integration will really help.

I don't see these as competition for any of the 6-series mixers.

That is good price for the 3 unit. Pretty much what I paid for my Oade modded Marantz 661 and you can use it as your computer sound interface when you are not shooting.

The MixPre-3 and 6 probably are great for bringing sound into your computer. But you'd have to connect your audio monitors via the 3.5mm unbalanced stereo output. Not the end of the world, though.

Yeah, this is not going to become my monitor controller at home. Need xlr outs for that. But, for a laptop or mobile setup, it would be great.

Ouch, you are correct. I guess I won't be selling my MOTU unit anytime soon...

Funny you say that. I was just joking with an audio engineer friend about how my Motu 896HD has been on (indeed a waste of energy!) nearly 24/7 from when I bough it in 2004. Talk about getting your money's worth! Not the best headphone amp, nor DA, but dang...it just keeps on going.

I've tracked bands live on the road with it, and mixed several soundtracks. Having said that, I'm 200% certain that the preamps in this new SD recorder will run circles around the clean but somewhat veiled sounding pres in the motu. Plus it's a wee bit more portable! ; )

I have a 4pre just for sound card duties and it has been a nice performer. I suggested to the company having it turn off via some sort of USB power signal when the PC shuts down as mine is on 24/7 as well.

I think the new SD units kind of overlooked the speaker output connections if they want to sell this as a sound card replacement. Maybe they could have swapped the third mic XLR input to make that side of the unit "output" with some better connection options.

Ya, they may have lost a few sales, but probably not many. Consider that one of SD's first products was the USBPre which they released in 1856 or something. So they've bene thinking about laptop/desktop audio and the music market for a long time (and recall that the founders are former Shure people). So I'd guess they spent some time thinking what sort of outputs they wanted on these new MixPres...

But ya. I would have liked nicer/more output options... Oh well.

The computer interface component seems a bit secondary to the obvious field recording/mixing features. Dumb to cripple the outs so as to serve neither well.

This 1/8 line out crap happens enough that it would be nice if someone created a compact level upconverter with XLRs..even TA3 mini xlrs.

I don't think the 3.5mm out is a killer for the MixPres' market and price. I do a bunch of work where I don't send sound to camera. And on some of that work, we don't use timecode. I'd think with the new MixPres you could still attach a little transmitter, say a Sennheiser G3, and send a good-enough scratch track to camera. Or buy a couple small TC generators (say, a couple Tentacle Syncs), jam them, attach one to the MixPre and the other to your camera.

If you really want XLRs, buy a 633.

I agree that it would be nice if the new MixPres has TA3 or XLRs (and for that matter, TC generators), but as others say SD wants to protect their higher-end products (which also have other features beyond the two I mention here).

These units are specifically for the DSLR market. They are very small and made to fit under a DSLR. This is not meant to be a replacement for other applications.

I don't think SD is trying protect their six series so much as just find a way to bring a recorder in at the price point of the current zoom and tascam video centric recorders. The feature sets at that price point seem comparable with the benefit that the preamps and limters on the SD's should be better.

Exactly. I've been eyeing the Zoom4 and will definitely go with the better preamps & limiters. While better outs would be nice, it's not a deal-breaker for my DSLR type needs.

I think we're saying pretty much the same thing from different angles. Will be interesting to see how SD's little recorders do in the field. Maybe I'll add one to my SD menagerie as a small backup recorder...

True. I recently sold a 633 that I had as a backup recorder and I am guessing I will pick up one of these as a replacement. It is just obvious that these new mixpre's are not in the same league. In fact, I wouldn't even consider these in the same league or as a replacement for my mixpre-d. With audio, you get what you pay for. You hear a lot of people on the camera side constantly complaining that manufacturers are overpricing their higher end cameras and limiting their lower end cameras. I hope the same misconception doesn't start hurting SD now that they've started releasing recorders in this new lower end market.

If SD is using the circuits I think they're using, these should sound excellent. These should seriously outperform the Zoom and Foster units.

I'm not in the market for this level of recorder, BUT I would go with one of these over a Zoom any day...
