sound channels and settings

I am producing a doc all by myself and need some sound help. I started doing interviews today and discovered that I did something wrong- the sound is not good.

I am using an external wireless lav mic and I just didn't know how to set my dials and channels. (Well I thought I did, but I didn't get good sound, so now I know I was wrong...)

I am writing to ask for instructions. For doing interviews outside (where there is street noise and stuff), I put my lav mic in output 2 (at the front of the camera) and I thought I should have channel one set to the internal mic, and channel 2 for the lav (on the left side of the camera). I set channel 1 to line and channel 2 to mic (on the front of the camera). I recorded keeping the pixels hitting just above the -12 marker. I did something wrong though and I don't know who to ask for reliable help! It's surely something very simple- something switched wrong or something. But I need guidance on how to fix it! I scheduled a second day of interviews for tomorrow. If you can help me, I would be very very grateful!

Thank you!
Kelly

If you have a single audio channel, I suggest recording it using two separate inputs, but at different levels. If you take a look at the switches behind the LCD, you'll see that you can map INPUT 2 to both CHANNEL 1 and CHANNEL 2 -- you can then set the volume dials in the back to different levels. That will hopefully let you avoid clipping.

You'll still have the audio from the internal mikes on CHANNEL 3 and CHANNEL 4 if you need ambient, or if something goes terribly wrong with the lav.

Those settings sound reasonable, but -- what about the sound from the wireless transmitter to the wireless receiver? If you're overdriving the signal at the mic it would be distorted when it hits the receiver.

Here's the ultra simple version:

a) plug your lav into xlr input 1
b) switch the switch near the input to "mic"
c) open your viewfinder and set the "Ch 1 select " switch to input 1
d) turn the input 1 mic power switch to "off", since phantom power is not needed
e) test your mic and turn audio level until it averages between the two marks
