Soul/R'nb music video, lots of slowmotion

I just uploaded my latest video music clip for Lynsun that I shot with an HVX200 and a small budget for the lights. I shot a lot of the scenes in 720p50 and the singer had to sing twice the speed of the song.

You can see it on my website in flash:

Directly in quicktime:

Or in a bad quality on youtube:

You can also check the makingof on the "MakingOf" link under the video on my website! I love the HVX more and more!!!!

really nice video, got a classy feel to it, slow mo works well with the back lit smoke shots,

what were your camera settings, scene file etc? and what were those lights you used for the back lighting?

nice one though, well done

Thanx! The DP crashed a bit the back's im the scene file 6 but then I made a lot of color correction! For the lights... I'm sorry but I don't know as DP put the lights... I only directed it, shot it, edit it, CC/SFX's it but didn't light it ;-)!

you mentioned you filmed in 720p50, are you using final cut pro? i cant seem to find an import setting for 720p50,

what is your workflow to get the slow motion result, import the 50p footage in a 25 sequence? frame rate converter?

thanks

photograhically it's decent. kinda wonder about the crushed blacks - was that a creative choice???

creatively - it's kinda all over the place and cliche. audio sync is nebulous and the pixiedust from her fingers against the wall shots are 90% gratuitous story wise... the instrument shots are nice but dont contribute to the story and the pull out to kit at the end was also kind of meaningless in the narrative. i do like what you were doing with the left/right dolly shots. that was fun and could have been built into a style treatment ; )

i do though tend to be OVER critical of the whole rap/r&b/diva video direction as a genre. seems EVERY single video is just out to do what the last one did - SNORE!

on the upside there were no "twenty fo's", crystal, or bling or shots in da club - so you're ahead of the game there...

it looked cool, but i quickly got bored looking at the same coupla studio scenes though. i would've liked some of the video to portray at least some of her lyrics since i wasn't that into the song and it seemed to go on forever. those wall shots were kinda bland. i didn't like the ending either.

Thanx for your reply's guys! My aim in this video was to shoot 2 scenes in one location with a connection in the middle but you are right, I also feel that it's a bit boring after a while seeing the same shots... but these were the only footage I had. This song is an outro of a compilation so it's very slow... so I tried to do a slow video with a slow mood.
We had to crash the black because the HVX was soooooo NOISY when I shot against the wall.

I worked in a 720p50 timeline in FCP 6 and I just imported the P2 footage with FCP and it played in slowmo in my timeline.

Thanx again for your constructive critiques! This will make want to do better next time ;-)!

do you have a 720p50 timeline setting? i dont have this setting, only 720p25, did you film in 720p50 at 25 frames per second or 50 frames per second?

Sorry for ll the question, I'm trying to work out this best method to get this slow motion look with correct mouth movements for a short film i'm about to help shoot, I'm in the UK,

Thanks

O right, that makes more sense, didn't realise you were in native 720 filming 50fps, thanks for ya help, best of luck with ya project

agree with the above comments about the same scenes looking redundant.

also the little sparkles coming from her hands looked cheesy. unless she's best friends with harry potter i don't see how it helps or is relevant to the song or theme. i never see that in real music videos from major artists. just videos on the internet with people editing in programs like After Effects.

mind you this is all my humble opinion and i am no video expert, just a fan. if this was my favorite artist's video i woulda said the same thing.

overall the technical aspects were spot on in my opinion. experiement with your creativity and try something you haven't seen before next time around.

i can tell you got the talent to pull it off.

keep shooting.
