SOS in Nashville

At my recommendation, a friend bought an HMC150. She currently has three Canon XH-A1s. She called me complaining about how noisy the picture is. I walked her though the Scene File 1 settings, made sure the camera was in manual at 0 dB gain, did a Black Balance and the picture is still really noisy. She is viewing the picture on two different HD monitors using an HDMI cable.

Since I am in Tulsa and she is in Nashville, there isn't much more I can do from here. Is there anyone in the Nashville area that could bring their HMC150 to compare it with hers? She would like to know if she got a lemon or what.

Thanks for your help.

Some users have solved this problem by doing a camera reset in the menu. Tell her to give it a shot. Scene files cine-v and b. press will be the least noisy. Black Balance was also a good bet, but hope the reset works.

hmm I will be in nashville on the 15th but hopefully by then she will have it figured out

She is going to try to reset the camera. Thanks for the tip. We set the gain levels at 6 for medium and 9 for high, but as she toggles through, the readout on the LCD shows 0dB even in the medium and high positions, so something wierd is going on.

John, thanks for the offer, but she has a gig on Jan. 8, so she needs a solution before then. At this point she has time to send it back and get another one in time.

Matt, thanks, but I think she is going to just send it back since the camera is not responding to the gain settings. It must be a faulty camera...that it unless anyone else has a solution.

Update:

She had the shutter in 1/15, which is why the gain did not work, so there was so user error involved. I'll PM you Matt. Thanks.

I used to do a lot of PC tech support for a living, in various capacities at different times in my very jack-of-all-trades career. One thing was constant. No matter how perplexing a problem was when trying to troubleshoot over the phone (or sometimes by email), and no matter how convinced I might become that it was a hardware issue when trying to troubleshoot before getting there in-person, it almost invariably turned out to be user error (or sometimes just out and out mind-boggling user idiocy, in astonishing ways that I simply had not, nor possibly could have, imagined in my wildest dreams previously - actually more times than I could ever hope to count, even with all my fingers and toes).
