hi,

i use my mark iii with utmost care, but somehow there appears a black dot in my footage. i have attached the screen grab from premiere.

it is not in the lens as i have tested with 2 lens and still the dot appears. it is more prominent at higher f-stops like 5.6 and above, but at 1.8 it is not noticed because of shallow dof.

what could be the problem, how do i clean the sensor manually? i have cleaned it automatically. pls help me i have a shoot on monday

thanking in advance

Its just a bit of dust on the sensor. Buy a cleaning kit and follow the instructions... Everyone should own a decent sensor cleaning kit if they own a DSLR.

Looks like dust…. once you tried it, you'll realize how easy and safe it is to clean sensors yourself. I learned to clean sensors the first year of my apprentiseship by cleaning our Leaf digital backs.

Are you looking at the sensor or the viewfinder mirror which covers it when switched off? Turn the camera on & switch into live view to reveal the sensor.

in the menu i select "clean sensor manually", which opens the mirror and i see the light greenish big rectangle which i guess is sensor. i don't see any dust on the sensor, but maybe it's very small for me to see.

as mentioned earlier, this dot appears when shooting at f5.6 and is very prominent at f22. so if there was the dust would this be the case?

Yes, if it's affected by aperture it's very likely to be a spec of dust or dirt on the sensor or lens. Have you tried another lens?

Expose the sensor again while it faces down and use a lens/sensor air blower to direct wind against it. That should take care of it. If not and if you're hesitant to clean it, take it to a competent technician. He can show you how to do it while he cleans it; it should only cost about $25.

if it changes with aperture, it's dust

it can be on the sensor, or on the lens (back element, front element, or inside)
if you look for it in the sensor, keep in mind that it's mirrored: if the spot is on the top right corner of your image, the speck of dust will be on the lower left corner of the sensor as you look at it

i used bulb blower to remove the dust, but the black dot still remains where it was. in fact, now another black dot has appeared on the other side as well.

i don't see any dust particle on the sensor, yet it appears on the photos and video. i also checked my earlier photos taken with my 5d and found that the faint dot was always present, though over the time it has become more prominent.

it doesn't look like a spec of dust, but rather a blot which is stuck to the sensor.

i checked with two lenses and the dot still remains. i did the sensor cleaning with no result. i also use bulb blower to puff out the dust from the sensor, but the dots still appears.

my cam is still under warranty, so i just gave it to the service center. But that opens an enlightening question of how to keep the camera sensor clean?

i would like to know how you take care of your camera and sensor? (maybe i should start a new thread about this)

I think most people have a cleaning kit and do it when they need to. I was shown once at the store and its very easy. If you are switching lenses in the field you will need to do it at some point. I'd say go to a good store get a kit and ask them to show you how to do it.
