sorry...noise again!

hi,
after trolling around the forums for many weeks, i decided to take the plunge and buy hmc151e. There is some truly amazing footage out there and here.
I have been having trouble (like SO many noobs) with noise/grain.
i have read many posts/threads on the subject here, and have also tried many of the solutions offered. Including "page 83", and various settings that users have posted.

i have been shooting manual everyhting, and WB manually and PRST.
Noise/grain is getting me down. Ill be mainly shooting parties/events in "lowish" light.

iv posted 2 frames to show the movement of noise, seems to move alot between 2 frames.
the video was shot 720/25p 1/48 shutter,no gain, iris open, WB prst indoor.
camera was "page 83"d.
scene 1 with master ped -10 and coring +3
everything else is default
room was lit by a high watt halogen uplighter
is this a reasonable amount of noise to expect?

thanks for any advice.
ps excuse the mess:cheesy:

I don't see any frames.

And if you plan to use a small sensor camera in "lowish" light (not sure what that means) expect noisy footage. These cameras are light starved. And especially blue light starved under halogens, which is nearly impossible to fix without gels or filters.

I don't see anything unusual there. Not well lit, practically no blue light.

Try this. Bring enough light into the room until you are forced to to use an ND filter. Then turn off the smallest of your lights. Leave the camera on daylight balance. No custom white balance. And post two stills from that.

hi
thanks for the response PerroneFord.
I think my problem was with the scene i was using. after a bit more testing i used the b-str scene, this made the noise less "fizzing".
Also, i think that my monitor wasn't helping the cause either, i kinda have to lean to one side to get the colours looking more accurate.
Your suggestion of leaving it "daylight balanced" gave a much closer representation to what the room looks like (although there was more red).

thanks

thanks

If you are after low-noise with the HMC-150 you should try out the NeatVideo noise reduction plug-in with your video editor:

NEAT Video Pro Noise Reduction Plug-In

You can download and try out the demo version. The Pro version of this plug-in costs $100, so it is quite affordable, and the results are great. ( it will take a little time to master this plug-in, but you can get quite good results right from the get-go )

It made premiere "slower" though.

All noise-reduction plug-ins will make your editor slower, so just keep them turned off until you are ready to render your footage.

NeatVideo is one of the best plug-ins for noise-reduction. I use it almost all the time.

Also you cant judge noise on computer monitors. My Dell LCD is the noiseist monitor i have ever seen. everything displayed on it video wise looks pretty bad unless you are a good distance away. It will bring out noise on DVD's that I dont see on my TV.

thats a very good point matt.
my dell is very noisey too, not too mention viewing angle for colours.
another thing about monitors, DON'T use their usb ports...they are REALLY slow compared to your computers ports. probably 5 to 10 times slower with my dell 2407
