As a newbie DVX user, can you grognards give me some ideas on the following:

(I seek a great warrior... Yoda)

1) the best accessories to get, and order of importance to get them in...

2) the best place in the Los Angeles area to get accessories...

3) any good books (other than the Panasonic Manual) that will help me get the most out of my camera?

4) any good "field modifications" ??

I'm a Camera Assitant and film loader in the union (Local 600), and my "dreaded side job" is at Reseda Photo in the San Fernando Valley... unfortunately for me, Reseda Photo does about 95% Still Cameras, and about 5% video...I'm hoping that the DVX will help me get to DP / Operator status faster...

I would recommend searching the forum. This has been covered many times.

Barry's book highly recommended:

Hi David, the most important accessories in order have been a UV filter, MQ tape, tripod, good shotgun mic, and then maybe a boompole, lights, reflector, mattebox, and wireless kit. Oh and don't forget the stevebox ;D Guys, tell him how critical the stevebox is.

Best place? Let the other guys here tell you that. Good books? Barry's is gonna be a hit, I just got mine today, and will start it this weekend. Field mods: Try not to, as it usually voids warranties and reduces resale value. Would you buy a Nikon F100 if it will only uses 50mm film? The most important field mods will be understanding what all the image settings do, so that you are ready to weild them when the time comes. So practice, and a good guide book, will prevail.

Rush,
Whats a field mod? Are those modifications you do to the camera yourself in the field?

We used to do those on Sony DXC-D30's in the field to get better colors and gamma beyond "safe" norms ;); we had to open the side panel and tweak the little pots with a thin nonconductive screwdriver, and just hope we don't fry the board, but then everyone would look at the footage and say, "Cool that looks like Digibeta". ;D
I figured that's what David was talking about...
