Sony's next version

Indeed it‘s a very safe bet it won‘t be a CCD.

But in my opinion it doesn't really need to be. I‘m a big fan of the CCD look and would love nothing more than that. But at this point I think that ship has long sailed. So if Sony would only get back to trying to emulate film for their theatrical cameras, it would already be a big step towards the right direction.

I have no doubt they can make a CMOS based theatrical camera that gives a very pleasing and aesthetic image which is as fitting to fantasy story telling as film is. After all ARRI did just that. But Sony needs to be first interested in pursuing that, instead of just trying to outdo their last camera‘s specs or the competition‘s.

The problem I see with Sony is not in their capacity to deliver. It‘s in understanding what the market wants them to deliver. The wide adoption of the Alexa for feature production over cameras arguably technically superior, clearly shows that people are still enamored with film aesthetics. Because easier workflow or not, the ARRIs would not be that successful if the images did not satisfy first.

I have actually replied to that thread too. But I think the discussion might be different coming from the perspective of FS7, F5 and F55 owners and F35 users. So it's worth it having the discussion in both groups in my opinion.
