The following is the NTSC model. I imagine that the PAL XAVC-S versions at 25p contain even more data per frame. I have had the chance to test both the Panasonic AG-AC8 and JVC's GY-HM70. They are the bare entry level prosumer ENG style cameras and both record AVCHD 28Mbps. I know both of the lenses from Panny and JVC and both of those cameras suffer from noticeable chromatic aberration in either fully zoomed out or wide.
However, here comes the 230 dollar HDR-CX405. I purchased three of these models for a start up wedding videography business for a client.
I have been so happy with 2015 or perhaps with Sony in particular as I can only imagine that here forward all of its consumer camcorders will include XAVC-S 50Mbps. I can really see the difference from sensor noise behavior, color, and compression. There are some vignetting ocurring in bright bg's which is common with cheap stock lenses. However, the vignetting is still the same if not better than the AG-AC8 or GY-HM70. Those cameras alone go for more than 1000bucks. Surely the ergonomics are there and practical and make a difference in holding, but with Sony's continued success with stabilization I wanted to try the cam without it. My client in which I consulted acquired three mini fig rig style holders since the CX405 weighs nothing! You can go on for hours without fatigue.
So I highly recommend this cam for weddings and events with your stabilizer rig. The only reason to have purchased this cam was for the XAVC-S, and I'm so happy that the results look great! I will be adding more tests for night scenes, and some color profile features within the cam. What you're seeing is a dry test with no features added including stabilization OFF and flat color profile.
