Sonys CMOS HDV leapfrogging Pany?

The August 2005 issue of DV Magazine spotlights a new camera with some very interesting advances. Now, I dont think this is really leapfroggin the HVX200 per se, but check out some of the specs of the Sony HVR-A1U.

No more verticle smear.

Wide dynamic range.

"Tele Macro" which "...lets shooters grab a macro image from a distance to finally, finally throw backgrounds out of focus for a more filmic look."

14 bit processing 1080/60i HDV.

CMOS has low power consumption.

MSRP $3500.00 US available early fall 2005


Woof! Now, if Pany would, could add just the first three features to its DVX HVX lines they just mght have the perfect device.

CMOS technology is certainly interesting. The current implementation leaves a lot to be desired, as it's a single sensor trapped in a consumer camera body. However, for cheap HD, nothing beats it -- the street price of the HC1 version is expected to be around $1600.

It will be most interesting to see the forthcoming JVC HD7000; it uses three 2/3" CMOS sensors. Of course, at $27950 it's not in the same price league, but it should go a long way towards demonstrating what CMOS sensors are capable of.

The new Sony is certainly interesting, but I don't find it's picture that impressive. Sony really do seem to be setting a low target for Panasonic to beat....
