CAMCORDERS: Sony Z200 & NX800 Master Class

I have no idea what the hell they are talking about, nor have I heard of any of the software names they mention. Audio on professional Sony camcorders, such as your NX800, is recorded with 24-bit / 48kHz quality PCM, which is better than CDs -- and not highly compressed. It is a universally supported format by all professional editing software, including Resolve, Premiere, FCP, etc. NOTHING special has to be done in post. When you import a video file, the audio will be included automatically with no extra steps.
Thanks Doug , got it !👌

Hi Doug , just one question - your Doug#4 requires Knee off but this button is not available when cinetone is chosen .You have to switch to ITu709 to do that . Does this mean , that knee is also „off“ when you go back to cinetone ?

You are correct that Knee is OFF and you cannot turn it on when using S-Cinetone. I'm not sure what your question is.

Maybe I misunderstood the fact , that you mentioned under Knee , that this has to be on „off“ when installing Doug#4.
If this is the case anyway under Cinetone and not to influence , I do not understand why it is listed in this chart.
All good , regards!

I do not understand why it is listed in this chart.
Knee is listed on the Scene File #4 chart in order to maintain consistency with other two charts. It makes more sense to leave it listed as "OFF" rather than excluding that row entirely, which I'm sure would trigger far more questions. The fact that Knee is already turned off by default (which I mention verbally), and cannot be turned on, seemed irrelevant to me. Sorry to hear that tripped you up.

Thanks Doug, was thinking about the same jesterday.I think message was Nr2 and I was disappointed that I did was not 3) because this message was always working well with my Z90.For changing to da Vinci am motivated but at moment a bit „energy depleted“ due to my PCA, now spreading. So let’s wait and see, I am very thankful for your expertise and patience, also versus bloody amateurs like me.With best regards, Robert

What exactly did the message say? I doubt very much that the camera told you to reformat the card. The camera will never tell you to reformat the card. Usually if there is a problem you will get a message that says "Media needs to be restored". And in that case you just allow the camera to fix the XML database problem and all footage will be okay. Or you go the the TC/Media menu page and do it yourself.

So, what did the message say, and what did you do when you saw the message?

FYI, when I was producing my Z200 master class I wasted over half an hour trying to trigger that warning by removing the battery while the camera was still recording, shutting off the power while still recording, etc. I did it multiple times and I could NEVER get the camera to give me that warning, nor did I lose any footage during all my attempts to cause a fault. The camera is rock solid.

The problem could very well be your your knock-off memory cards. Why risk losing footage to save a few dollars? Not worth it. If you can't afford quality memory cards then you can't afford the camera. :) Also, CFexpress cards are unnecesary if you use high-quality SDXC cards. I almost never use CFexpress with my Z200 or FX6, even when shooting 4K @ 120 fps.

Update:
First longer experience with the nx800 , just still here in Singapore , filming the New Years fireworks etc.
Spend € 2500.- for new Sony Tough CF , every second day a breakdown , sometimes twice a day , where I cannot stop recording ( the red rec light shows up but keeps frozen ) and I cannot switch off the camera .The only safe way to resolve the problem is to put the on/off switch to off (but does not turn off) , remove both flashcards , remove the battery , wait a bit , reinsert the battery , camcorder now stays off, reinsert the flashcards and turn it all on again and situation is like nothing had happened.
Tried it out in different rec scenarios regarding steering of CF (simultane or one after the other) or different recording Formates, solomotion etc. , could not even find out one systemic situation, causing this issue.
It is not the flashcard as presumed , also the cheap Pergear does as well as Tough and all the Sandiscs , this was not the point.

And the second issue I have is the big difference between the picture on the Camcorderscreen and the result back home with the Sony Beamer Projector 8 .
The first is flat without contrast and pale colours, not to correct in the menue of the nx800 , back home on the screen everything is perfect so it is evident , that my cinetone settings are perfect for me out of the box ,but not reflected via the nx800 screens.
Never had the problem before , not being able to see the later result during filming.A small difference would not bother me but the latter is huge.
I think I will have to send the Nx800 to Sony via Prime Support , due to my experiences.

Does anybody else have similar observations, experiences resp. ???

Is that 2500 Euros you spent on memory cards?

My experience with the screens on the NX800 is that they did not match what I saw on my editing monitor from recorded footage. Undersaturated and lacking contrast just as you have described.

You mean to say that the little viewfinder and LCD on the camera didn't match the picture on your dedicated grading monitor in post? I'm shocked.

Take it easy Doug :) It is 2025. I expected the screens to be better. Clearly they got cost cut or ignored as my A7 mirrorless camera viewfinders have more adjustability settings. I never use the LCD but like to use the eye cup & viewfinder as a trusted monitor in the field that never changes. While the Z200/NX800 viewfinder is fine as you have stated, it does not offer any way to make it look better and only has low, middle & high brightness settings. Opportunity missed for me. Throw away for you.

I also use external monitors but a viewfinder + eye cup is more reliable if it is a quality representation imho.

Yeah , in Austria the cheapest offer for 10 (ten) 160GB Tough was € 2990.- , USD 3083 ,they gave me 10% off as a discount for black friday.
I’m beginning to try out all options coming down from the best codec level at the moment , XAVC S-I , so each card gives me 40 min.Just on the way home , will see the results of my trip soon.

As mentioned above , as a mere hobbyist , filming 99% run and gun on my trips , mostly nature and wildlife , I am used (same as others) to check the picture on site only with LCD and viewfinder .What else have I got in the Antarctica for example?I need minimal weight and equipment - should I still carry an Atomos with me???
This couple of weeks of trying out the camera at home I tried to experience myself with the imagination , how the false picture of the camera screens COULD look nice back home on my beamer. And I moved over to do picture corrections with the beamer options first and when this fits , I move over to import the stuff into my NLE , so far with satisfying results.
This is what counts for me at the end , the picture on the screen .

BUT it really remains the horrible issue , not to see the right picture in the NX800 I can rely on ,I am forced to hope , that back home it will fit to a certain degree.Just by experience, not nailed for me on the built in screens when I am using this camera.

I agree. External monitors are affected by ambient light, so they have their own challenges.

In my view, it is not necessary to use All-I codecs for high quality acquisition. It appears you are using the CFExpress type A cards instead of SDXC cards. Which is your choice but it is crazy more expensive.

Back home now , did make a quick check already from some footage and I must say , fantastic. Never had such a good camcorder and I had almost any semiprofessional ones from Sony and Panasonic.Did the fireworks with gain 8 , just right ,bright enough but not too much , zero noise under Dougs recommendation to put noise reduction always on high in the menue. And the beamer is fantastic too.Tried never to use more than gain 17 , also here almost no visible noise .Autofocus incredible good compared to earlier times , did let him stay a bit longer on subject , so is not too nervous. What I still have to learn better is to handle zebra.Have it on 85% and above but under certain conditions I produced overexposure with ND Auto , due to not finding the right value of AE turning in minus.Sometimes you can leave Zebra with an astonishingly heavy pattern without affecting picture in a bad way at the end ( just saw it back home on the screen) - but sometimes you have to bring it down until to almost detectable , otherwise the picture is lost. Here I have to gain more experience , not so easy to decide , under which circumstances you have to behave how to get the best result. And as stated above , you can forget the LCD and viewfinder as a helping tool due to their flat picture.

Now I will try to reset my NX 800 hopefully solving the problems with its hangups.I do believe that it mostly occurs in the recording mode where it is not possible than to stop and move to standby . The recording action is stopped indeed but red rec light remains and you cannot turn the camera off anymore because all frozen. Let’s see.

By the way , I have very good experience with the Sony shooting grip GP-VPT1 with Mini Tripod. You can shift it a bit either to front or rear to balance the weight , also depending on battery you are using.Lightweight , spreadable 3 small legs and adjustable angle of the whole grip. But I cut off the wires , don’t need them.

Did a full reset , problem solved , not even one hangup anymore.

I am just in Newzealand with the NX 800 , run and gun , helicopter fly , bright weather , 4,5 hours walk on a volcano.Steep as hell.
Damned heavy camera for this but maybe I got a bit too old now with 73 , after that hike I was done.

Followed the advice of Doug that manual exposure with zebra is mandatory for real specialists BUT I have to report , on such a trip with the NX800 this is the horror.Never had this before with any Sony with the old manual 3 step ND button.Variable ND - one of the features I was so much looking forward to- does not prevent overexposure in 80% of all day footage. So you have to fiddle around with this damned small multi dial wheel to adjust AE value , sometimes down to even -3 , depending on content of picture. And this can change very fast , a move of the helicopter is enough and I am in overexposure in a second. For me this is a new , additional , difficult , not handy essential action. And it blocks your concentration completely , affecting the rest of what you have to look after in such a run and gun situation.A helicopter , hike or ship cruise is not a studio.
And I do believe , that for these conditions, the NX800 is not to recommend,

Is this the same issue with the var.ND of any FX6 , 7 or 9?

And as stated above, the second real issue is this flat , undersaturated viewfinder and LCD.Both have the same problem so it doesn’t matter if you use one of them just for whatever, I also only use the internal viewfinder in 90% when working with this camera.
