Hey im having a lot of problems with editing my hd footage in vegas 6.0. When im playing back my footage on the program its just sketching out a lot and wont smoothly play through it...very tough to see if im editing **** correctly. I was told to get an ectra gig of Ram on my computer so ive got it up to 2 gigs now and its still doing it. Any help? or suggestions?

What type of processor are you running?

I had the same problem when I used to edit with my FX1, but ever since I upgraded it seems to run better.

HD is a pain the you know what to edit on a timeline that will allow it to run smooth. Usually I have to render my clips on in the workspace on Vegas in order to get smooth playback.

You might want to set your preview window on draft.

Are you editing the native m2t files or cineform intermediates? Editing the actual mpeg-2 files will put more strain on a computer than the cineform intermediate files, though both do require more horsepower than editing DV25 media.

Also, is media on a different hard drive from the system? Is it internal or external? What type of interface does it have (IDE, SATA, USB 1/2, Firewire)?

There are several factors necessary for smooth playback, and they all sort of need to come together for it to work.

well im using the mt2 files. How do i use the cineform files or whatever? Also i am editing internaly..i have everything else stored on my external hard drive but the footage im working with is internal. The interface is usb. thanks for the help so far.

When you say "internal", do you mean the media is on the same drive as your operating system, or on a separate drive? You definitely want to have your media on a separate drive than your operating system/programs, as trying to access both from a single drive can seriously affect playback peformance.

Here is information regarding converting your m2t files to Cineform intermediate files:

Nathan,
I suggest you use either CineForm files or GearShift proxies. If you're monitor is slower than a 3.4GHz, I recommend GearShift. Otherwise, use CineForm.

ALWAYS use a second drive, whether external or internal. You can edit CineForm or GearShift proxies from an external drive, no sweat. m2t files were never meant to be edited, contrary to popular marketing information. mpeg in low bitrates is not a good editing format, period. It eats up far too much processor horsepower, among many other things.
