Sony XBR Bravia LCD (USB2.0) and the HVX200

Just returned from the Sony Store to check out the new Sony Bravia XBR 40" LCD HDTV...and I have to say I was blown away.
First of all, although it's not true 1920x1080 it is the best picure I have seen yet on a non-CRT HDTV. Excellent blacks (better than the std. Bravia) and brighter whites and a nice, punchy picture. Apparently this is due to a totally different system of backlighting on the XBRs.
The real thing that interested me was the USB2.0 input. Hopefully this will allow true digital monitoring from the HVX (without having to use a computer). On the HVX, I plan on shooting a lot of 720P due to variable framerates and increased storage so the resolution will be more than fine for me.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this XBR in person, and can confirm the USB2 out of the HVX should display on this LCD?!
Thought I'd pass it along. Although expensive it's a very impressive set.

Haven't seen it, no. The USB2 port on the HVX is for hooking up to a computer so you can use the HVX as an external "hard disk"; I don't see how that could be used to play video directly. Then again, I was a little surprised when I found that my Sony XBR includes a camera-control application to play back DV, HDV, and MicroMV files through its firewire port, so maybe -- but I doubt it.

Hang on... are you saying the USB 2.0 is used as a video input?

That's neat.

Edit:

OOPs.

Barry answered the question just as I posted it.

I've also seen firewire inputs... I assume it's also for control devices...

Actually, I think the firewire inputs are generally for video playback.

There are no firewire inputs on the Bravia. Only analog and USB2/HDMI.

I haven't seen the Bravia... the Firewire was mentioned on other LCD monitors on the net.

My understanding Firewire is just a medium for moving data.

If the above post is correct and Firewire is really a video input, it opens up this question: wouldn't the TV have to understand the data compression in order to play it?

Yes, and it does. My XBR960 can play back footage from Sony and JVC cameras. In fact, that was the most amazing thing -- the TV can play back 24P HDV footage! Not even the camera I was using could display it! I was using a JVC HD1, and when it came to the 24P section of the tape, the HD1 display just put up a "cannot display video data" message, but apparently it still transmitted the stream down the firewire, because the television could display it!

So my TV has at least a DV codec and an MPEG-2 codec in it, and can control a camera or deck that's connected via firewire. It has a built-in camcorder player program.

As a note, I have seen a 40" XBR, and for an LCD it is excellent. It handled via component cable the GY-HD100 live signal very well.

Thus far, however, I have been most impressed with a Pioneer plasma HD TV I am thinking about purchasing, That was easily the best signal I have seen so far, and handled the display better than the XBR. With the XBR, one of its most admirable characteristics is the aboility to support 1080P. I think the XBR (if you can afford one-- they do make a 26" I think) will work awesome with the HVX, and hope people will get them to view footage from the HVX. I would also think that Panasonic would release something very similar to Sony's XBR hand-in-hand with the HVX, so keep an eye out for something like that in the near future.

I just recently purchased this TV and I must say it had a super picture! I was a little dissapointed that it didn't have firewire input, but got over it pretty quickly after watching a few DVD's in true 24p!

if anyone has any questions about it feel free to ask.

Holy Mackeroonies!

The implications are awesome for those who want to display HD content! Throw in Mpeg4 and H.264 compression into the TV and we're all complete.

It may be possible to play HD footage straight off firewire capable stand alone hard drives or recordable disc medium (DVD), with a controller.

It's an alternative to the relatively obscure LInkplayer or the wait for the Bluray/HD wars to settle.
